From the beginning of detailed routine monitoring in 1968 (and probably before) until the end of 1993, annual and seasonal development of phytoplankton in Lake Kinneret showed a relatively constant pattern. In the late winter and early spring there were extensive blooms of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense, followed in summer and autumn by much lower standing stocks of predominantly nannoplanktonic chlorophytes. Although Microcystis spp. were prominent (usually concomitant with the dinoflagellates) in the early 1970s, subsequently this genus and other cyanobacteria were generally unimportant contributors to phytoplankton biomass. Since early 1994, however, a marked change in seasonal phytoplankton development has been noted. There were record high blooms of Peridinium in 1994 and 1995; in the following years, 1996 and 1997, no dinoflagellate bloom appeared. In the late summer and fall of 1994 an exceptional bloom of Aphanizomenon ovalisporum occurred; this was the first recorded instance of an outgrowth of a potentially toxic and N-2-fixing filamentous cyanobacterium in this lake. This organism has been observed in low numbers in each subsequent year. In 1995, 1996, and 1997 Microcystis also became prominent. Levels of primary production since 1994 have generally been higher than previous multi-annual averages.

Available archaeo-botanical finds (most of them from Israel) show that the carob Ceratonia siliqua L. existed in the Eastern Mediterranean basin long before the start of agriculture. Early literary sources indicate that its domestication took place relatively late (only in Roman times). The probable reason for this late date is that the carob does not lend itself to simple vegetative propagation, and its cultivation had to wait until the introduction of scion grafting into the Mediterranean basin. Carob culture reached its peak in this region in early Islamic times. C. siliqua cultivars and wild-growing trees frequently grow side by side, and intercross rather freely. It is proposed that under domestication, hermaphroditic clones were favored, causing a partial breakdown of dioecy in carob culture. Through introgression, this development also affected some of the wild populations.

I cannot meaningfully discuss the survey reports of engagement or disengagement. However, from my vantage point, there are broad areas in which Israel is a significant part of contemporary American Jewish life, including young Jews. The engagement with Israel that these phenomena reflect is a better informed, more pluralistic and more complex relationship that can no longer be measured on the old scale of blind loyalty and support. Perhaps that may not be much succor to the traditional organizations that currently mobilize and channel support for Israel (AIPAC foremost among them), but the relationship between American Jewry and Israel is transforming itself into something new and more mature.

Based on an examination of Israel's territorial conceptions, strategies, and achievements since the establishment of the state, this article shows how state territoriality subsumes ideology and political agendas and may, under certain circumstances, lead the state to negate its very self-conceptions and harm its own perceived interests. Its analysis pays special attention to the state's inadvertently produced territories of negation, which run counter to its own conception of territoriality, and considers the kind of social-spatial entities produced by the state. It also considers Israeli territoriality's more recently asserted goal of shaping Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, in addition to the goals of controlling Jerusalem and Judaizing the Galilee and the Negev. To illustrate the theoretical assertion that discriminatory and marginalizing state territoriality has the distinct potential to bring about its own negation, the article concludes with two prominent expressions of this phenomenon. The first is manifested in green-line Israel, where the state's territorial policies and the resulting marginalization of the Palestinian minority has resulted in collective resistance against the state and its policies, basic Jewish-Israeli symbols such as the anthem and the flag, and Israel's very definition as a Jewish State. The second is manifested in Israel's inadvertent creation of bi-national spaces both within Israel proper and in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, indirectly promoting the solution of a single bi-national state and posing a serious challenge to the very goals that Israeli territoriality has consistently strived to achieve. Fifty-nine species of Hadeninae were recorded in Israel, four of which are new for the local fauna: Anarta arenbergeri, Hecatera cappa, Hadena magnolii and Mythimna straminea. About half of the species (27) are of Mediterranean origin, one third (19)are of eremic origin, and the rest are either Trans-Palearctic (4), Holarctic (1), Afro-Tropical (1) or Irano-Turanian (3). Four species are endemics of the Levant: Orthosia cypriaca, Perigrapha mundoides, A. arenbergeri and Hadula engedina. In Israel, some species shift to different biotopes at their southern Distribution border from what is their usual habitat in the center of Distribution.

In this article, I offer an ethnographic examination of neoliberal techniques of control through absence by the Israeli military, the state institution most associated with discipline, indoctrination, and direct coercion. I highlight the ways that the apparent withdrawal of the state from practices of indoctrination and the punishment of conscientious objectors are accompanied by a shift in recruitment and training that emphasizes self-advancement and social mobility above national and ideological commitments. While in the past the Israeli state and military focused exclusively on shaping self-sacrificing citizens, today it invests a great deal of its effort in structuring the calculated choices of self-interested individuals toward favorable outcomes. I explore the uneven but strategic deployment of incentivized governance and consider some of the effects of these techniques for the meaning of engaged citizenship and the politics of state violence in a militarized society. Further, I demonstrate that the lightening of disciplinary sanctions in favor of individual freedom is an effective form of weakening dissent and that it confounds efforts to constitute organized resistance to militarism, leaving activists floundering to find effective ways to express their political concerns.

While discussions of Israeli cuisine as a distinct cultural field are relatively new, the cuisine already proliferates in media, food service, and industrial production. In content, it reflects influences from a variety of global sources. This articleargues that Israeli cuisine arose through the application of Zionist historical intelligibility to diasporic and indigenous Arab cuisines. The result is a cuisine that embodies the characteristic, teleological "ingathering of exiles" to appropriate diasporic culinary traditions. Thisprocess characterizes Israel's hegemonic control of the means of narration and the production of a superfluous diasporic Jewish and indigenous Arab population.

The study area at Zait Bay, Egypt (C. 700 km(2)) is situated in the middle of the West Asian-East African migration flyway used by very large numbers of soaring migrants. At this site the corridor narrows into a bottleneck. There exist only very few bottlenecks of this magnitude in the world. Observations were performed at all hours between sunrise and sunset at 26 observation sites, situated 5 kin apart. The northern part of the area under investigation (19 observation sites) Was Situated within the Gebel El Zeit IBA (criteria A1 and A4iv), while the southernmost part (8 observation sites) was outside. The overall evaluation has shown that -179,681 soaring birds including 1 22,454 storks and 36,976 raptors were observed in total. Within a radius of 2.5 km from each observation site 97,143 soaring birds including 59,308 storks and 30,489 raptors were observed during the 604 hours of observation. Eleven species were recorded in numbers that exceed 1% of their flyway Populations. Of special concern regarding bird conservation are those birds resting or flying in the first 200 m of elevation. In total 6,624 soaring birds were seen resting (2,252 within a radius of 2.5 km). Thirty-three percent of the storks and 47% of the raptors were observed resting or flying at heights within the lowest 200 in. The median height of flying birds varied between 5 m (harriers) and 500 m (Common Crane Grits grits). According to the raw data, criteria for nomination of the area as an IBA (20,000 raptors and storks in one migration season, globally threatened species) were fully met Outside the existing IBA. Also, to the south of the study area, very high numbers of migrants were confirmed by spontaneous, non-systematic observations. Accordingly, a change of the boundaries is Suggested. The regional analysis, based on extrapolations, has to be regarded as a preliminary study. The analysis failed to show a geographical trend for any single species. The data from this study establish a high concentration of gliding and soaring birds in the study area, within and adjacent to the already designated IBA.
