The proposed research effort builds on and extends the work of the previous ONR-funded Validation Coverage Toolkit for HSCB Models project. The overall objectives of the on-going research program are: (1) Help scientists create, analyze, refine, and validate rich scientific models; (2) Help computational scientists verify the correctness of their implementations of those models; (3) Help users of scientific models, including decision makers within the US Navy, to use those models correctly and with confidence; and (4) Use a combination of human-driven data visualization and analysis, automated data analysis, and machine learning to leverage human expertise in model building with automated analyses of complex models against large datasets.

The report covers the methodology of the 1986 New Entrants Survey. The survey was administered in 1986-1987 to a sample of recent college graduates in science and engineering--persons who received their bachelor's and/or master's degrees during the academic years of 1981/82, 1983/84, and 1984/85. The purpose of the report is to describe the survey's methodology, to present the sampling design, to document the sampling error estimates, and to report the survey's response rates.

The exchange program of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (ASUSSR) dates from 1959. Comparable interacademy programs for exchange of individuals were begun with the Poles, Yugoslavs, Romanians, and Czechoslovaks in 1966, with the Bulgarians and Hungarians in 1970, and with the East Germans (GDR) in 1978. The seven East European programs represent approximately two-thirds of total exchange visits (as measured by months of quota and program cost); the Soviet program, one third. Relatively unaffected by changes in U.S. political relations with the Soviet Union and its European allies but sensitive to American concerns over violations of human rights, the interacademy program operated for many years at approximately 330 months of exchange visits in each direction annually. With Federal budget reductions in 1981, support for the Academy's Soviet-East European exchange program, which has come exclusively from the National Science Foundation, was reduced by nearly 50%. At that time, the quotas in all programs were proportionately reduced.
