This document examines concerns practitioners of restorative justice must keep inmind when working with people from different cultures. Efforts to address these concerns must deal with challenges full of potential dangers and pitfalls. The following section provides a brief overview of the restorative justice concept and a cursory glance at some programs that attempt to apply restorative justice principles. Discussions of program models that apply restorative justice principles are then presented. Next, the pitfalls and dangers that may hamper restorative justice efforts within cross cultural contexts are identified. Finally, ways to increase positive interactions when working with persons form different cultural backgrounds are presented.

A major step in the cultivation of hepatitis virus and the eventual development of a viral vaccine revolves about the development of appropriate substrates. Hepatitis virus is known to grow rapidly and successfully in liver in vivo. If appropriate tissue culture conditions could be developed, hepatitis virus should grow successfully in liver tissue culture. One problem in attaining this goal has been the rapid development of fibroblastic cells in mixed cultures resulting in the inhibition of growth of hepatocytes. Newer tissue culture techniques have been employed using liver cell homogenates cloned at high dilutions so that hepatocytes alone are planted in tissue culture. Another promising technique employs the cultivation of liver explants grown on plastic plates. This method uses collagenase as a digesting agent and also a medium free of argenine to suppress the growth of nonparenchymal cells. A third tissue culture method involves the use of explant cultures of human liver in which fragments of fetal liver are implanted on polyethylene discs to form monolayer cells. These monolayers are then subcultured and implanted in plastic falcon flasks, Each of these methods has successfully resulted in hepatocyte cultures. (Author Modified Abstract)

Callus structures were isolated from a number of edible plants and maintained on simple defined media for extended periods. Growth rates are slow in comparison to other microbial systems, and increase tends to be linear. Static cultures on solid media double in 5-10 days, yield up to 0.26 mg dry weight per ml per day, and attain a maximum weight of about 12 mg dry weight per ml. Suspension cultures double in 2-5 days, yield up to 1.1 mg dry weight per ml per day, and attain a maximum weight of about 23 mg dry weight per ml. These growth rates are of the same order of magnitude as those for higher plants growing conventionally. Considerable improvements in these growth rates will be required before use of plant cell cultures as food can be realized economically. (Author)

A process for propagating a pathogen in a three-dimensional tissue mass cultured at microgravity conditions in a culture vessel containing culture media and a culture matrix is provided. The three-dimensional tissue mass is inoculated with a pathogen and pathogen replication in the cells of the tissue mass achieved.

This is a catalog of the 12 microalgae species available from SERI. A major emphasis of the culture collection is to make available most of the existing scientific and culture data for each strain in the collection. Each strain is listed in the catalog with a summary of its most important physiological and culture characteristics. (ERA citation 10:002107)

The use of 10% oxgall and bile broth medium, both supplemented with freshly prepared 100 u/ml streptokinase, for isolating Salmonella typhi by clot culture technique was evaluated and compared against whole blood culture systems (3 ml blood in 9 ml media and 8 ml blood in 72 ml media). These gave a 1:4 and 1:10 blood to medium ratio, respectively. Clot cultures in 10% oxgall (CLOX) gave a 57% positive isolation rate for S. typhi. A similar result was obtained from clot cultures in bile broth medium (CLBB). A total of 184 samples identified as positive for S. typhi were tested. There was no significant difference between the use of 10% oxgall or bile broth medium when used for clot culture. The whole blood culture systems still showed a significantly better rate of isolation than the clot culture methods. This report describes research and recommendations for describing cultural knowledge. We discuss some of the approaches that have been used in the past, which have considered culture as a factor-analytic problem, as a cognitive style and as a set of shared knowledge. We develop a set of recommendations for extending Cultural Mixture Modeling (CMM) to move beyond the shared knowledge perspective and enable integration of the factor-analytic perspective as well. We provide a number of examples and recommendations regarding how structural models provide the appropriate representation for extending CMM and discuss issues related to statistical representation and inference that will need to be addressed on this path.

The publication presents an overview of the archaeology of the Central High Plains. The volume provides baseline information about the archaeology of the USDA Forest Services's Regions 2 and 3 and the Bureau of Land Management's Carson City (Colorado) and Albuquerque (New Mexico) Districts. The work describes the archaeology of portions of five states and represents a large geographic area ranging from the Continental Divide to the Plains of Kansas and Nebraska. In this synthesis, an interpretation of the culture history of the Central High Plains will be presented in terms of eight archaeological periods plus a review of the ethnohistory of the area.
