Results The study was undertaken in Chitradurga and Ramanagar districts of Karnataka, India, from 2010 to 2012 to analyse the economics of processing and value addition to areca leaves and nuts. Data were collected from ten entrepreneurs/farmers using an exhaustively set-out questionnaire. Data relating to place of procurement, cost of raw nuts, transportation cost and maintenance cost of machineries, labour used, processing capacity of machineries, building rent, packing and marketing information were collected from the respective farmer, besides their socio-economic aspects. Processing and value addition to arecanut into slices and chips in the village goes a long way in sustaining the livelihood of rural poor besides generating employment in the villages.
