Farmers were getting low yield in spite of good cultivation practices. The trees were showing symptoms like tapering towards tip, short internodes and yellow colored little leaves. Based on these symptoms it was suspected that the trees have been infested with root grub. Then the trees were uprooted and examined. The affected roots were severely infested with root grubs. Based on the mandates of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the demonstration was conducted by imposing the treatments like phorate (25 g/tree) and chloropyrifos (8 ml/tree) during August 2003, August 2004 and September 2005. In the treated gardens the trees showed the symptoms of untapering towards tip, larger internodes, greenish colored healthy and normal sized leaves and the garden was completely free from root grub infestation. A group meeting was conducted to spread awareness among neighboring farmers about the time and method of application of treatments for the effective management of arecanut root grub. Farmers were impressed with the higher yield and root grub free gardens. They motivated the other farmers of their surrounding villages, to go for this method to get rid of arecanut root grub menace. 收起
