This paper describes the symptoms of Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae, in artichoke, which is one of the main constraints for artichoke production worldwide. The pathogenesis of Verticillium wilts and the population biology (which has been studied mainly by means of vegetative compatibility analysis as well as analyses of the fungal DNA, including random amplified polymorphic DNA, restriction fragment length polymorphism, amplified fragment length polymorphism and specific primers) of V. dahliae from artichokes are discussed. The disease cycle, epidemiology and diagnosis are also described. Some Verticillium wilt management strategies are mentioned, i.e. (i) use of V. dahliae-free planting material, (ii) site selection for the establishment of new plantings, (iii) soil disinfestation by fumigation and solarization, and (iv) use of resistant cultivars. Future prospects for effective management of the disease are given.
