As U.S. shipyards adopt zone oriented ship production techniques, the need for employing an accuracy control system has become apparent. There are a number of repeated functions to be performed following the establishment of the system. The goal of the research is the development of the necessary, user-friendly computer software to support an accuracy control system. The software package will be flexible to ease its adaptability to any shipyard. It will include all required analysis subroutines, a data management system and the links to vessel and work process definition for inclusion in a CAD/CAM system. The software will work interactively, and will provide distributions of variation and control charts as standard outputs.

This collection of papers on manufacturing technology research was presented at the Sixth Annual NSF Grantees'Conference. The first paper discusses the goals,history,scope,and activities of the Production Research and Technology Program. Several research presentations concern geometric modeling, a computer-aided injection molding system, a design for economic manufacture,optional planning of computerized manufacturing systems,and the design and analysis of such systems for small parts with emphasis on non-palletized parts of rotation. Subsequent papers include progress in flexible automation and materials handling research,modeling and analysis of materials handling systems, a generalized manufacturing simulator,in-process optical gauging for numerical machine tool control and automated processes,holographic laser material processing,industrial robot control systems,and computer integrated assembly systems. A list of attendees comprises the appendix.

Included data are power levels, operating efficiency, exposure, tonnage, conversion ratios, and annual production for the C, K, and small reactors.

The paper discusses recent innovations in manufacturing technology and their implications on the design and control of manufacturing systems. Recognizing the need to respond properly to rapidly changing market demands, the authors discuss several types of flexibility that can be incorporated in the production organization to achieve this goal. It is shown how the concept of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) naturally arises as an attempt to combine the advantages of traditional Job Shops and dedicated production lines. The main body of the paper is devoted to a classification of FMS problem areas and a review of models developed to understand and solve these problems. For each problem area, a number of important contributions in the literature is indicated.

This paper investigates the origins of productivity leaders, those that operate close to andhelp push out the production frontier. Do such businesses emerge as top performers from the very beginning of their lives, for example as the consequence of an outstanding founding idea, technology, or location. Or, at the other extreme, do they appear initially as completely average (or even underperformers) that exhibit gradual improvement as they learn and develop with age. To answer this question we draw upon five decades of U.S. Census of Manufacturing (CM) establishment-level data, tracing the productivity leaders of the most recent CM (2007) back over their observed life spans. We also examine possible industry-level correlates of variation in the extent of nature versus nurture that are suggested by theories of industry dynamics and economic growth.

The Department of Agriculture's purchases of surplus dairy products increased from about $247 million in fiscal year 1979 to about $2.7 billion in fiscal year 1983. To help reduce the dairy surplus and government costs, the Congress in November 1983 authorized a temporary (January 1984 through March 1985) milk diversion program that was funded primarily from an assessment on milk producers' sales. Some 38,000 milk producers were paid about $955 million to reduce their milk sales from a base period by 7.5 billion pounds in 1984 and 1.9 billion pounds in the first quarter of 1985.

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are contained in a wide range of products of economic and strategic importance to the Nation. The REEs may or may not represent a significant component of that product by mass, value, or volume; however, in many cases, the embedded REEs are critical for the devices function. Domestic sources of primary supply and the manufacturing facilities to produce products are inadequate to meet U.S. requirements; therefore, a significant percentage of the supply of REEs and the products that contain them are imported to the United States. In 2011, mines in China produced roughly 97 percent of the worlds supply of REEs, and the countrys production of these elements will likely dominate global supply until at least 2020. Preliminary estimates of the types and amount of rare-earth elements, reported as oxides, in semimanufactured form and the amounts used for electric vehicle batteries, catalytic converters, computers, and other applications were developed to provide a perspective on the Nations use of these elements. The amount of rare-earth metals recovered from recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse is negligible when the tonnage of products that contain REEs deposited in landfills and retained in storage is considered. Under favorable market conditions, the recovery of REEs from obsolete products could potentially displace a portion of the supply from primary sources.

The value of the Korean organic market has increased substantially in 2005, especially imported organic processed products. According to import data collected by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA), imported non-processed organic products increased by 76 percent (from $1.7 million to $3 million) and imported processed organic products increase by 157 percent (from $12.6 million to $32.4 million) in 2005. These processed products came largely from the United States and about half were used as ingredients in the manufacturing sector.
