This report presents results achieved during the first year's effort to develop test methods and use criteria for fabrics in drainage, erosion control and soil reinforcement applications. The report does not treat fabrics for use in asphalt pavement reinforcement. An extensive literature search and field survey was conducted resulting in the development of interim criteria and fabric properties needed for a wide range of fabric applications. Test methods to evaluate these properties are identified and new test methods suggested where existing ones are considered inadequate. Specific results obtained include a discussion of important fabric properties and how they are affected by type of polymer and manufacture, an identification of fabric uses together with what fabric properties are important for each use, and an appraisal of the current knowledge regarding soil-fabric interaction, fabric performance and cost effectiveness. Recommendations are made for new test methods, or modifications of existing ones which need to be developed, to evaluate important fabric properties. A wealth of basic data has been accumulated for the development of improved tests and criteria to be used in the next phase of the project.

The National Science Foundation s United States Antarctic Program (NSF-USAP) is constantly striving to introduce materials, methods, and equipment that will increase efficiency and reduce costs of their logistics and operations activities. Storage and transportation of bulk waste is a resource- intensive task for the USAP; and the introduction of high performance fabric containment and transport products, because they are cheaper, take up less volume when empty, and are lighter than the existing waste bins, could improve waste operations. We adapted standard test methods to represent Antarctic conditions to allow us to evaluate the behavior of high performance fabrics for the USAP. We conducted cold temperature strength and flexibility tests on two commercially available off-the-shelf products. The fabrics were designed for the containment and transport of bulk-waste products in more temperate climates and required evaluation and testing to determine whether or not they might work for the USAP. The results from Gelbo flex tests (ASTM F392/F392M-11) on samples of both fabrics immediately removed one product from consideration. The successful product underwent tensile tests (ASTM D751) and UV exposure tests and was subsequently recommended for consideration. This report presents the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test methods (as adapted for extreme Antarctic conditions), the test results, the material behavior, and our recommendations.

A method and apparatus for fabricating straight or curved planar or three-dimensional (C channel, for example) fabric for fabrication into composite structures is presented. In the first embodiment, the fill yarns are inserted between layers of warp yarns, and a canted or curved reed, depending on the desired orientation of the fill yarns, is used to compact or 'beat-up' the fill yarns. In the second embodiment, the warp yarns of the fabric are curved using a conical or a combination of conical and cylindrical rollers to effect differential fabric take-up of the warp yarns for obtaining a constant radius of curvature of the warp yarns. In a third embodiment, a clamping bar fabric take-up device is used to effect the differential fabric take-up of the warp yarns for obtaining straight warp yarns, curved warp yarns with a constant radius of curvature, curved warp yarns with a non-contant radius of curvature, or some combinations of straight and curved warp yarns. In a fourth embodiment, for forming the flanges of the curved C channel, the warp yarns are alternately inserted through adjacent dent wires of the reed to permit vertical weaving of the flanges.

The paper describes results of experiments simulating the phenomena occurring during burns of apparel items. Fabrics were burned near a semicylinder which was covered by 54heat sensors. The areas which received various heat loads (corresponding to various depth of burn injury in real-life flammable garment accidents) were recorded. In most cases, the semicylinder was moved during the burn,so that the burning fabrics made contact with it,simulating movement by the victim during a garment burn. This caused rapid extinguishment in some but not all fabrics. Results are reported for 40fabrics varying in fiber content, and fabric construction and weight.

The Secure Automated Fabrication (SAF) Program was initiated at the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory (HEDL) to develop and demonstrate an advanced manufacturing line (SAF line) for plutonium oxide breeder reactor fuel pins. The SAF line is to be installed in the Fuels and Materials Examination Facility (FMEF) at Hanford and will utilize technology that focuses on improved safety features for plant operating personnel, the public, and the environment. Equipment and process improvements incorporated by the SAF line will yield significant gains in nuclear materials safeguards, product quality and productivity. (ERA citation 81:025099)
