Integrated-circuit boards are successfully reworked at sea in a converted LCU vessel by technicians without prior experience as a demonstration of feasibility. Tools and equipment required are organized into an itemized repair kit. Analysis of shipboard maintenance trends indicates that automatic equipment is not likely to achieve 100-percent testing capability, and that there will always be occasion when the success of a mission will depend upon a technician to isolate and rectify faults in complex electronic equipment. Need is foreseen for electronics technicians with greater aptitude and more intensive training. (Author)

Government and commercial facilities are becoming more operationally dependent on sensitive and complex electronics systems. These systems require precise and continuous supply of electric power for trouble-free operation. Desensitization of sensitive electronic equipment to power supply abnormalities is one approach toward achieving increased operational reliability. This report covers the results of an experimental investigation to determine the susceptibility limits of a selected solid state electronic test unit and to evaluate techniques for desensitizing the unit to a variety of typical power line transients. It was concluded that when sensitive electronic systems are being developed, susceptibility tests should be performed to provide design criteria for desensitizing the equipment on a cost effective basis. A beam analyzer is discussed which was constructed for the investigation of characteristics of electron beams employed in linear beam microwave tubes. The design and construction features of the four basic parts of the analyzer are described in detail. Experimental results, which were obtained on two electron guns of simple geometry, are presented and used to evaluate the operation of the analyzer. The problem areas involving ion production due to poor vacuum in the analyzer are also discussed. (Author)

The reliability achieved by military electronic systems and equipments is highly dependent upon the proper selection and application of the electrical and electronics parts used therein. Chapter I of this document provides requirements for three basic elements of a parts reliability program consisting of: (1) parts derating, (2) part quality, and (3) design for long life. Chapter II contains derating curves and part selection and application information on the ten most commonly used electrical and electronic parts. Appendices provide information on electrical subjects of interest pertaining to parts application and reliability. The rapid technology of electronic part and device engineering may cause some of the information contained herein to become outdated. This is especially true of the information contained in sections 100 through 1000 of this document where new military specifications or revisions of those existing are constantly being generated for new parts and new part types.
