A study of the techniques which have been utilized in fabricating cylindrical magnesium/magnesium perch-lorate/m-dinitrobenzene dry cells on a oratory scale reveals two principal features which require revision in adapting the procedures and construction to the methods of quantity production, follows:
(1) Wet mixing, accomplished in the laboratory by hand-kneading with rubber glove, must be replaced by a machine operation, preferably one which is
carried out in the same equipment as is used for the prior dry-blending of e powders.
(2) The construction of the separator, wherein isolation from the can bottom is achieved by folding the liner over itself twice, across the bottom of e mandrel, prior to insertion of the liner into the can, and isolation from e can wall at the top is achieved by folding the paper inwards from all sides after insertion of the carbon rod, should be replaced by the simple construction common in dry cell manufacture, utilizing a paper disk at the bottom and a per washer at the top.

A static inverter for a portable, silent, military power source providing 120 volt, 60 and 400 Hz a.c. and 24 volt d.c. power is described. Sinusoidal a.c. voltage is processed by a high frequency static inverter from a mechanically rechargeable metal air battery d.c. power source. The battery and inverter manpack modules, weighing 35 and 30 pounds, respectively, supply 500 VA continuously for 5 hours per anode charge. (Author)

The improvement of design technique and component reliability during the last several years has made the power source the limiting factor in the design of biological radio-telemetry equipment. Of the many sources available the dry cell is most commonly used and is usually the most economical. This paper briefly describes the characteristics and limitations of the most commonly used primary and secondary dry cells. Familiarity with the operation and design philosophy of the various dry cells will enable the user to select the most suitable cell for a particular application. Also included is a section on thermoelectric cells powered by a radioactive source.

The basic 'D' cell made on this contract has the same construction as that developed on previous contracts except for an improved carbon cup which utilizes a thermosetting resin binder instead of the coal tar pitch formerly used. Eleven experimental lots have been made and put on test to evaluate various materials for the cell jacket, the anode sealing washer and the insulating and reinforcing tape. At this time, no definite differences in performance have been observed between cells using different materials of construction. Capacity maintenance at 130F has been over 90 percent at up to three months. Uniformity has been good. The feasibility of making a 'C' cell has been demonstrated and work is under way on equipment to make this size cell using the same design and materials of construction as are used in the 'D' cell. A flashlight adaptation of an ultraviolet (UV) source has been made with a battery/converter supply powering a mercury vapor lamp. Two D-size common flashlight batteries power a single dc-ac modified Royer inverter whose output drives the UV lamp. The small circular UV fluorescent mercury-glow-discharge lamp is powered by a roughly 250-V square wave. It is eye safe. Illumination is confined to several square inches to preserve security in the presence of visible reradiation from the fluorescent map surface. The continuous operation capability exceeds 10 hr above roughly 50F. (Author)
