Two D-size common flashlight batteries power a single dc-ac modified Royer inverter whose output drives the UV lamp. The small circular UV fluorescent mercury-glow-discharge lamp is powered by a roughly 250-V square wave. It is eye safe. Illumination is confined to several square inches to preserve security in the presence of visible reradiation from the fluorescent map surface.
