Economic globalization and knowledge economy provide new opportunity for development of Suzhou, a histori- cal city which has traditional intimate relationship with Shanghai. This paper aims at exploring the changces, and chal- lenges faced by Suzhou at the new century and makes the quantitative analysis of the urban function of the Suzhou Municipali- ty through the studies of the Greater Shanghai Metropolitan Area and the Shanghai-Suzhou relationship.

Background: Shanghai was considered to be a "capital of opium" in modern China, hence the history of opium in the city has received significant attention. In the Shanghai International Settlement, where Chinese and foreigners lived as neighbours, drugs were considered by the administration as both "trouble maker", and important financial resource. This paper explores how the Shanghai Municipal Council (SMC), the most senior governing body in the settlement, used its position to maximize political and economic profit from the trade and consumption of opium.

Investigators discuss new findings in Networks. According to news reporting originating in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, "In recent years, weakly supervised object detection network has achieved great development. However, due to the lack of bounding box supervision, the framework based on multiple instance learning tends to activate a part of the object rather than the whole object, which severely affects the detection performance for nonrigid objects." Financial support for this research came from Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant. The news reporters obtained a quote from the research from Shanghai University, "To solve this problem, this paper uses traditional features and sample weighting to guide the network to focus on the whole rather than the part of the object. Especially, salient priors are introduced to provide coarse pseudo bounding boxes to assist network initialization and to explore more accurate features in conjunction with the multiobject search strategy. In addition, we design an area-guided sample weighting algorithm to optimize the network to search for objects from larger areas, which avoids local domination." According to the news reporters, the research concluded: "Experiments on public datasets (PASCAL VOC2007, PASCAL VOC2012) show that the proposed algorithm outperforms several state-of-the-art models." This research has been peer-reviewed.

The thesis of social polarization in the global city has been debated for a decade, though there are few studies of cities playing major global roles in developing countries in general and cities in transitional economies in particular. This paper investigates the socioeconomic transformation of Shanghai, an emerging global city in China. From 1990 to 2000, a significant loss of occupation occurred within manufacturing, especially in State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), while it increased mainly in the producer service sectors, and the tertiary outgrew the secondary to become the largest sector. Nevertheless, neither polarization nor professionalization, as seen in cities in the West, is identified, although the trend of increased socioeconomic disparity is found. Social stratification is not only impacted by economic globalization but also driven by state policies. Income disparity is increasing and human capital is seen to be increasingly important. The state is inextricably involved with the market in determining final outcomes. As a result, two groups are expanding in the social structure: globally-oriented skilled labor at the one extreme and rural migrants at the other. The unique socioeconomic outcome of Shanghai underscores the complicated interactions between globalization and local politics. It highlights differences between globalizing cities with different functions as well as political and economic legacies.

This study examines views and experiences of young Shanghai women with respect to masturbation. Through in-depth interviews with forty young women in Shanghai aged 22 to 39 from May 2004 to July 2007, the study explores women's understandings of masturbation, their desires and their lives as modern Chinese women. The focus of the analysis is on how women talk about their masturbation experiences and make sense of their experiences in the context of their sexual relationships and lifestyle choices. By analysing women's narratives about masturbation, the paper suggests that women's self-articulation is actually an engagement in self-image construction. The strategies they use to position themselves in relation to different social discourses on masturbation, how they describe and perform the acts and how they articulate their experiences of masturbation are examined to illustrate how young women in Shanghai perform gender and sexual intimacies in a fast changing city.
