Academic writing can seem a daunting prospect although with the right support and information it can be more achievable than you think. In this first set of editorial comments of 2016, editors from all sections of the Health Information and Libraries Journal outline the origins of the individual section of the journal which they oversee and highlight some of the things you might want to consider when thinking of submitting your writing for publication.

In recent times, there has been an observed stagnation of lecturers in terms of academic level growth and non-promotion, which is linked with publication output. This necessitated the investigation of LIS lecturers’ publication output in universities in Nigeria. The descriptive design was adopted using an online questionnaire, which yielded 86 responses. Data generated were analyzed using simple percentages, Tukey HSD tests, and ANOVA. The study revealed that the productivity of LIS lecturers is based on their area of specialty and interest. Factors such as promotion, contribution to knowledge, peer recognition, salary improvement, and staying current (consistency/complete involvement in research activities) were the major reasons that they publish. Time constraints, poor interpretation skills, exorbitant publication fees by journal editorials, and the high rejection rate of manuscripts by journals hinder publications. Statistical significance was observed in the number of publications of LIS lecturers from library schools in various geopolitical areas. The study therefore recommends that financial support from both government and non-governmental organizations should be made available to lecturers. Such funds should be accessible with the provision that there be appropriate feedback on research progress. Departments and institutions can also organize seminars or symposia on the need to collaborate in research, and outline steps on the preparation of manuscripts suitable for publication in reputable journals to avoid rejection by journal editorial boards. There should also be a reduction of workload for lecturers through the provision of work leave/vacation for some period of time to ease work and research tension.

To understand the history and research status of monsoon scholarly publication, a scientometrics study based on the Science Citation Index-Expanded has been made from 1900 to 2018. HistCite was used to analyze the annual outputs, countries, institutions, categories, journals, citations, and high-impact authors in the field. Results revealed that the annual number of outputs showed an increasing trend over the past decades, with an especially rapid increase after 1990. The country with the greatest academic impact was the USA, while the institution with the highest research outputs and citations was the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Meteorology Atmospheric Sciences and Geology were the most dominant categories. Journal of Climate was the most active journal, of which both in outputs and citations. Through citation visualization analysis, monsoon research mainly focuses on two aspects: modern monsoon and paleomonsoon.

I describe a simple modification which can be applied to any citation count based index (e.g. Hirsch’s h-index) quantifying a researcher’s publication output. The key idea behind the proposed approach is that the merit for the citations of a paper should be distributed amongst its authors according to their relative contributions. In addition to producing inherently fairer metrics I show that the proposed modification has the potential to normalize partially for the unfair effects of honorary authorship and thus discourage this practice.

Toxoplasmosis endangers the unborn child if its infectious agent--toxoplasma gondii--is transmitted transplacentally during pregnancy. Although this condition occurs in all parts of the world and represents a major public health burden, no detailed knowledge on the global research architecture of congenital toxoplasmosis is available thus far. Hence, it was the aim of this study to assess the related global research activity over the past 110 years. We employed the NewQIS platform, which combines established scientometric and socioeconomic analysis tools with novel visualizing techniques such as density equalizing mapping projections. In the Web of Science, 13,044 congenital toxoplasmosis-related items published between 1900 and 2012 were identified. These were issued by 26,483 authors originating from 125 countries. The US was the dominating nation (38.7 % of total scientific output), followed by France (10.9 %) and Great Britain (9.2 %). The US also led the ranking in regards to semi-qualitative parameters (total citations, country-specific h-indices and citation rates). When research activity was related to economic figures, the ratio of total toxoplasmosis publications to the total GDP listed Switzerland first with an average of 589.35 toxoplasmosis-related publications per GDP in 1000 Bio US-$, followed by France (545.16), the UK (486.13) and Brazil (431.84) and the US (311.11). The relation of toxoplasmosis-specific publications to the economic power indicator GDP per capita in 1000 US-$ revealed that the US was ranked first with 97.65 toxoplasmosis-related publications/GDP per capita in 1000 US-$, followed by Brazil (85.95). Subject area analysis indicated a relative shortage of studies that addressed pharmacological or public health aspects of congenital toxoplasmosis. This study is the first in-depth approach to sketch a global picture of the congenital toxoplasmosis research architecture. In contrast to other fields of biomedical research, not only high-income countries play a major role regarding congenital toxoplasmosis research but also countries such as Brazil that have a high incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis.

This study is aimed at examining the publication output differences between librarians and academics at Niger Delta University and Delta State University in Nigeria. The study employed a comparative method. The study comprises focus groups made up of thirty librarians and forty academics (teaching staff) from Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, Bayelsa State; and Delta State University (Debu), Abraka, Delta State. Questionnaires and interviews were used for data collection. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analysed using simple percentage to answer the research questions and a chi-squared statistical tool of significance to test the formulated hypotheses. The study revealed the following: that librarians and academics in the two universities published equally; that high qualifications influence the publication output of librarians and academics; and that long daily working hours, heavy workload, a limited number of local journals, and high publication charges are some of the major problems militating against the publication output of librarians and academics in Nigeria. The study will stimulate librarians, despite the obstacles militating against their publication efforts, to see the need to publish like their lecturing counterparts in order to meet promotion requirements. The findings of this study should move university authorities in Nigeria to set aside time (hours or days) for research activities for all academic staff as directed by the National University Commission (NUC) in Nigeria.

Background: Recent years have seen a considerable shift from male doctors to female doctors in the field of gynecology. Female doctors are traditionally more involved with planning and maintaining their family. For gynecology, this could be associated with a risk that research activities will decrease, particularly if results are published in scientific journals. Methods: In view of this shift, a comparative observational study was carried for 2022 in which 1306 publications were matched to 1786 female and male doctors reported on the websites of the 44 locations of university gynecology departments in Germany. In addition, the volume of publications issued between 2014 and 2022 was compared for Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In Germany, the volume of publications in Gynecology was additionally compared with the publication outputs of the specialties Urology and Trauma Surgery. Results: Since 2014, the increase in the numbers of publications in the field of Gynecology in Germany was lower (225%) than that of the countries with which it was compared (238%/252%/260% for F/UK/USA). When Gynecology was compared with other medical specialties in Germany, the number of publications in Urology were found to have increased at a lower rate (196%) while the number of publications in the field of Trauma Surgery increased by more (286%) than that of Gynecology. At the start of 2023, the percentage of women who were working as doctors at the lowest hierarchical level (junior doctor) was 81%. The publication output per capita of female doctors working at lower levels in the medical hierarchy, i.e., working as junior doctors and senior physicians, was between 40% and 80% lower than that of male doctors working at the same level. However, female directors published as much as male directors did. In the lower hierarchy levels, men were up to 14% more likely to be without an academic title. Predictors for more extensive publication activities by young female and male doctors include the extent and quality of publications by doctors in senior positions, the presence of a comprehensive cancer center or an institute for human genetics at the location where the young doctors were working, and joint publications with foreign authors. Conclusion: For the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the results suggest a number of approaches to promote young researchers. The support provided to young female doctors is especially important as this should help to retain them as junior researchers over the long term.

Predominant government behavior is decomposed by frequency into several periodic components: updating cycles of infrastructure, Kuznets cycles, fiscal policy over business cycles, and election cycles. Little is known, however, about the theoretical impact of such cyclical behavior in public finance on output fluctuations. Based on a standard neoclassical growth model, this study intends to examine the frequency at which public investment cycles are relevant to output fluctuations. We find an inverted U-shaped relationship between output volatility and length of cycle in public investment. This implies that periodic behavior in public investment at a certain frequency range can cause aggravated output resonance. Moreover, we present an empirical analysis to test the theoretical implication, using the U.S. data in the period from 1968 to 2015. The empirical results suggest that such resonance phenomena change from low to high frequency. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study analyses the publishing output of Chinese authors in a group of leading economics journals over the period 2000-2010. We find that the output distribution across institutions is unevenly distributed, but within institutions there is a relatively more even spread. Research output has more than doubled over the period and is comparable with South Korean and Japanese output. Authors associated with US institutions have been an important source of research output growth. However, domestic output has also been increasing. Econometrics is the main field of output growth.

Over ten years ago Brazil entered the era of genome projects with the launch of its first sequencing effort. Since then, a series of projects have been undertaken in the country, greatly contributing to the formation of scientific research networks, related infrastructure and specialized labor. Today, Brazil's competence in this area is internationally recognized and it is one of the main countries in the number of genomes sequenced. This article examines the effects of these genome initiatives on Brazilian technological innovation, through a broad bibliometric review, comprising the analysis of academic and patent publications, which revealed that the development of technology has not kept pace with scientific output.
