31 suckler calves (20 male, 11 female) were separated from their mothers for short periods of time. The calves were removed from the herd, fitted with a heart rate recording device, blood and saliva samples taken and body temperature recorded; measurements were taken again after transport and isolation in a small room for 60-90 min. Body temperature, total protein, creatinine, blood urea, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, O2CAP, haemoglobin, haematocrit and carboxyhaemoglobin did not change between the start of the experiment (A) and the end (B) of the separation period. pH, pCO2, pO2, base excess, HCO3, O2CONT, O2SAT, HHb, methaemoglobin and albumin changed noticeably between A and B. Digital sound recordings taken from dams and calves were processed to test the reaction patterns of cattle at different developmental and functional stages and to assess the use of auditory cues in cattle communication. The significance of the results is discussed.
