Mechanical properties of Ti(N) were evaluated by three different ... 展开 Physical properties and biocompatibility of surface-nitrided titanium Ti(N) were investigated to examine its possible use as an abrasion resistant implant material. Mechanical properties of Ti(N) were evaluated by three different tests, Vickers hardness test, Martens scratch test and ultrasonic sealer abrasion test. Vickers hardness of a nitrided layer of 2 μm in thickness was 1300, about ten times higher than that of pure Ti. Martens scratch test showed the high bonding strength of the nitrided layer with matrix Ti. The abrasion test using an ultrasonic sealer showed very small scratch depth and width, demonstrating extremely high abrasion resistance. The dissolved amount of Ti ion in SBF was as low as the detection limit of ICP, and that in the 1% lactic acid showed no significant difference from Ti. The tissue reaction of cylindrical implant in soft tissue of rats showed very little inflammation, and fine particles of 1μm induced phagocytosis, which was similar to Ti. The implantation in the femora of rat showed the new bone formed in direct contact with implants. Ti(N) with sufficient abrasion resistance and biocompatibility comparable to Ti is promising as an abrasion-resistant implant materials such as abutment in dental implants and artificial joints. 收起
