This study analyses the factors influencing labour migration in two states (Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India, and assesses the impact of labour migration on the farm economy. The samples for this study comprised 200 randomly selected out-migrant families and 200 non-migrant families, with land holdings less than 2 ha, from both states. Results from a logistic regression model show that the number of family members and their educational status had a positive impact on migration. On the other hand, per capita land availability, income other than remittances and caste negatively influenced migration. Non-migrant farms have higher farming efficiency than migrant farms. In contrast to the non-migrants, rice and wheat cultivation among migrants is characterized by higher input cost (owing to more use of hired labour), lower grain yield and hence lower returns over cost. Differential economic efficiency among migrant and non-migrant households indicates income inequality among them. Suitable policies which are mutually beneficial to migrants and society are suggested.
