In the ion source, sample molecules are usually ionized by reagent ions through proton transfer or charge exchange reactions in gas phase. The quasi-molecular ions thus obtained have been frequently used in molecular weight determination. Weinkam and Desiderio et al. studied the solvolysis of gas phase ions. Recently, it has been reported that some classical reactions in solution chemistry can take place in gas phase. Using pure methanol as reagent gas, we obtained the MeOHCI mass spectra of 24 carboxylic acids different in type and observed gas phase esterification. 收起
