This is our first volume of the Undergraduate Journal. It is an approbation of the impressive research performed by summer interns under the guidance of their dedicated mentors. The full-length publications were chosen from a pool of submissions that were reviewed by many of the excellent scientists at our National Laboratories. Most of these students will pursue careers in science, engineering and technology and, hopefully, some of this talent will remain with our labs. We have also included about 125 abstracts that survived the review process. These were submitted from all of our participating National Laboratories.

The HBCU Summer Research Training Program accepted a total of 8 students from Lincoln University for the eight week session during the summer of 2011. One student canceled at the last moment for personal reasons. Four of the students were supported by this grant and three of the students were supported by the second grant awarded in 2011. Each student was assigned to a laboratory of a participating mentor and also paired with a member of the mentor s laboratory. This laboratory member assisted with day to day aspects of the research project. During the summer the students worked diligently on their research project, participated in meetings of the mentor s laboratory, attended workshops and seminars associated with our and other summer programs, and attended a special course in prostate cancer. We integrated the Lincoln students into social programs held throughout the campus for summer interns. At the end of the summer sessions the students presented a poster of the research results from the summer experience. They also presented the results of their research in the fall at Lincoln University. All of the students are continuing their undergraduate education at Lincoln University.

The United States Air Force Graduate Student Research Program (USAF GSRP) is designed to introduce university, college, and technical institute graduate students to Air Force research. This is accomplished by the graduate students being selected on a nationally advertised competitive basis during the summer intersession period to perform research at Air Force Research Laboratory Technical Directorates and Air Force Air Logistics Centers. Each participant provided a report of their research, and these reports are consolidated into this annual report.

The Duke University Marine Laboratory, with funding from the Office of Naval Research, conducts an 8-week summer internship program for rising seniors from two high schools: East Carteret High School and West Carteret High School. The purpose of the program is to expose students to active, on-going research programs so that they may be able to understand what is involved in a career in marine science research. Groups of interns are preselected by a committee of science teachers at each school and the applications are sent to the Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML). At DUML, applications are reviewed and rated by a panel of three scientists: one from NOAA-NMFS, one from the University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences, and one from DUML. Three interns are selected from each of the two schools. Interns are matched with research faculty at DUML who then contact the interns in the spring to begin the process of developing a research topic.

Norfolk State University BEST Lab successfully hosted three Summer of Seasons programs from 1998-2001. The Summer of Seasons program combined activities during the summer with additional seminars and workshops to provide broad outreach in the number of students and teachers who participated. Lessons learned from the each of the first two years of this project were incorporated into the design of the final year's activities. The 'Summer of Seasons' workshop program provided emerging educators with the familiarity and knowledge to utilize in the classroom curriculum materials developed through NASA sponsorship on Earth System Science. A special emphasis was placed on the use of advanced technologies to dispel the commonly held misconceptions regarding seasonal, climactic and global change phenomena.
