A program designed to modify health habits, needs to be developed within an organizational as well as a personal context. The program should also recognize that the health promotion effort should involve interventions that members of the community can focus on themselves. But will anyone out their listen. Most people now recognize the extent to which they can influence their own health and well being. But they often do not act upon that recognition, and here is where the organization must exert its influence to insure compliance with a healthy life-style. The following discussion attempts to link the two concepts, stress management, and health promotion into a cohesive fabric of organizational-personal intervention to insure a healthy military population.

Research on the pathological effects of stressful life events and the many controversial issues confronting life stress researchers have been reviewed recently in a number of volumes. Long-term studies of stressful or disruptive life events and health changes are needed in order to identify particular life stressors that have importance for disease etiology, etc. Procedures should be carried out after it has been established by means of objective data that certain life events affect illness rate. A NIOSH sponsored workshop was organized to address questions concerning the ability of self control or even perceived control over environmental stimuli and demands and the relationship of this control to health outcomes. The papers generated by this workshop were included in the report. Data were presented on the effects of control type phenomena; there appears to be a clear convergence in the opinion that control at work has important health implications. Specific topics considered at the workshop included the control of job stress through establishing control over the job, the psychosocial work environment, worker control and well being, stress control and implications for health at work, cognitive social learning analysis of the coping process, psychophysiological mechanisms related to control and coping resulting in health implications, coping behavior, epidemiological perspectives on the role of control in health, the theoretical/empirical basis for occupational stress impacts of control, methodological concerns in job stress research on controllability, and the implications for further research and intervention. A 24-page bibliography is included.

In a large western city, 61% of the police of all ranks and specialties filled out extensive personality and similar questionnaires, to measure stress, strain, value systems, departmental and interpersonal experiences, and social and recreational experiences, and gave their blood pressure, as well as access to their personal departmental histories. Samples of under-35 white males matched to the police by age were drawn from the fire department and other municipal agencies. These groups were given many of the same measures as the police. Data reported are preliminary.

This competency based module on training for physician assistants is part of the series, 'Competency-Based Dental Assistant and Physician Assistant Modules: A Conversion Project,' which was developed in large part from Armed Forces training materials. The modules in this series are gauged to the student at the post-secondary level. Self-paced to allow the student to progress according to his or her choice and ability, the modules can be used either by the individual alone or in the traditional classroom framework. All the modules contain five components: an introduction/rationale, behaviorally-stated objectives, learning activities, practice exercises, key terms and tests. There is a separate explanatory guide to the modules, 'Organization and Utilization Guidelines for Physician Assistant Curriculum Modules,' but it is not crucial for the use of this particular module. Part of the 'Social and Psychological Aspects Modules' sub-series, this module reviews the general principles of the stress reaction, the role of the nervous and endocrine systems in the stress reaction, and the physiology of the stress reaction, including the effects of cortisol, the fight/flight response and the general adaptation syndrome.

This bibliography contains annotations for 48 articles. The articles fall into two main categories: empirical studies and theoretical and review articles. Although the former outnumber the latter 35 to 13, the ratio of review articles to empirical articles is surprisingly large. The bibliography will help researchers to locate scientific articles on the effects of stress on judgment and decision making.

Serious shortcomings in existing instruments for assessing life events coupled with the inadequacy of retrospective designs in evaluating hypotheses concerning the causal impact of experience led to the development of a new methodology for assessing daily occurrences. First, using diary recordings a sample supplied a pool of events. These events were then categorized, arranged in outline form and linked to a set of dimensions used to rate psychological reactions to the events which were experienced. This initial instrument was pilot-tested for two weeks with husbands (targets) reporting their own experiences and their wives completing the form as observers. The instrument allowed husbands to adequately record their daily experiences and several predictions (e.g., desirable events related directly to 'positive' moods) were confirmed. Nonetheless, husband-wife concordance was low and prompted an additional study. Several revisions based on participants' comments and our own experience with the initial form were made and more extensive training was provided to the participants. Additionally, some subjects received phone calls on selected days to allow us to better understand the reasons for low husband-wife concordance. The major source of discordance was that information known to the target was unavailable to the observer. Thus, the instrument appears to be a convenient way of collecting accurate data on daily experience. (Author)

The objective of the present program of research is to study physiological processes that may mediate the links between psychological states and cancer. Specifically, the present study is designed to conduct an investigation of the cross-sectional associations between indices of stress reactivity and psychological coping styles in women with breast cancer and matched healthy controls. The aims of the project are: (1) To quantify parameters of biological reactivity to a behavioral stress paradigm in women with and without breast cancer; (2) To examine (a) group differences between women with and without breast cancer in biological stress reactivity, and (b) the effects of menopause and familial risk on biological stress reactivity and emotional expression; and (3) To develop the methodology and obtain preliminary data which could justify subsequent, prospective research with high-risk populations.
