This study succeeded in using physician expert judgment to develop and validate one severity and two quality of care indices for cross site comparisons to evaluate the impact of EMS effectiveness on psychiatric emergencies in the ED. A subjective methodology was chosen because of short development time, low development cost, and a minimal empirical data base. Multi-attribute utilities and Bayesian likelihood ratios were used to quantify the indices. Construct validity was demonstrated at the .90 and .89 level for severity and quality of care respectively. Internal validity of the severity model was demonstrated at the .78 level and for the quality models at .62 and .66 respectively. External validity for the severity model was demonstrated at the .73 level and for the quality models at .53 and .64 respectively.

This annual report of medical research in the Veterans Administration for Fiscal Year 1972 presents selected examples of discoveries and improved clinical procedures to provide better medical treatment for the nation's veterans. Advances are recorded in life-saving injections for acute heart attacks, new techniques for evaluating earlier discoveries of cancer, and noteworthy progress in endocrinology, surgery, psychology, psychiatry, and the major disciplines of medicine and basic science. Highlights of this year's accomplishments in sickle cell anemia investigations, tumor detection, computer analysis of electrocardiograms, treatment of gastric ulcers, and a large number of other areas of research are presented.

A large number of Americans think about, plan for, and attempt suicide every year. In 2008, an estimated 8.3 million adults had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year, 2.3 million made a suicide plan, and 1.1 million attempted suicide. Rates of suicidal behaviors varied by age, with young adults aged 18 to 25 displaying higher rates than older adults. Rates of suicidal behaviors were also significantly higher among those with a past year substance use disorder than among those without a substance use disorder. About 6 in 10 of the adults who attempted suicide received medical attention for their suicide attempt. Preventing suicide and addressing the health care needs of persons at risk for suicidal behavior require public health information-sharing efforts that not only highlight the fact that effective preventive interventions exist, but also attempt to reduce the stigma associated with mental and emotional problems and mental health treatment.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has a broad portfolio of mental health and other related activities, ranging from intramural studies to grants, contracts, and workshops. This compendium provides an overview of the research and activities that AHRQ has conducted and funded. It was organized so it can be useful to people approaching AHRQ research from different perspectives. First, the research is divided into broad sections such as extramural research grants/contracts, intramural research, and meetings sponsored by AHRQ. These broader sections are categorized into subject-matter areas: extramural research is grouped by type of disorder or problem (such as depression) or a cross-cutting topic (such as pharmaceuticals); intramural research is grouped by health services research topics (such as access). Many of the entries give the information needed to access the research. Some research results are available in print as articles, AHRQ reports, etc. Some are available on the Web or as audiotapes. Some are released as the result of projects undertaken in cooperation with other organizations, such as the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force Brief descriptions of findings are included if available.
