Metric spaces and their embeddings have recently played a prominent role in the development of new algorithms. So far, most of the emphasis was on embeddings that preserve pairwise distances. A very intriguing concept introduced by Feige [Fei00], allows us to quantify the extent to which higher-dimensional structures are preserved by a given embedding. We investigate this concept for several basic graph families such as paths, trees, cubes and expanders.

In this paper, a new class of spherically symmetric interior solution with cosmological constant lambda is obtained, to which Florides' solution is extended. As a special case, the metric in uniform proper density is discussed. The Robson junction condition is also extended to the case with lambda , which is a set of necessary and sufficient condition for a spherically symmetric metric to join smoothly onto the vacuum metric at a nonnull boundary surface. Major findings of a study of the issues affecting the introduction of metric practices throughout the U.S. shipbuilding industry are presented in this report. The study aimed to determine how the industry's markets, supplies, and operations would be affected by the external influences driving, not only shipbuilding, but the entire national industrial base toward the metric system of weights and measures. This report identifies the forces which make conversion to metric usage necessary or desirable, identifies cultural and operational impediments to the conversion process, and proposes pragmatic recommendations for dealing with the major issues at both the individual shipyard and industry levels. This report is the result of extensive discussions with individuals in industry and government who are actually involved in metrication, as well as members of the marine industry with and without experience in metrication. Surveys of shipbuilders and suppliers provided valuable insight on the perceptions and experiences of these sectors. These views became the basis for further investigation and discussion.

It includes a set of criteria for evaluating the quality of an agency metric transition plan. Also included is a description of an overall, 'aggregate,' appraisal that results when the criteria are applied to the entire federal agency planning effort as though it were a single comprehensive plan. The report is intended for use by federal agencies, as well as by any organizations and individuals whose business-related activities are affected by federal agency programs.

We introduce an agility measure enabling the comparison of two very different leaping-from-rest transitions by two comparably powered but morphologically different legged robots. We use the measure to show that a flexible spine outperforms a rigid back in the leaping from-rest task. The agility measure also sheds light on the source of this benefit: core actuation through a sufficiently powerful parallel elastic actuated spine outperforms a similar power budget applied either only to preload the spine or only to actuate the spine during the leap, as well as a rigid backed configuration of the identical machine.

Distributed target tracking and identification is an important element of operational environments. In this paper, we develop a fidelity metric of track purity assessment using confusion matrix (CM) fusion. We assess individual distributed tracker track purity associations for a multitarget scenario from two platforms. The fidelity metric for each tracker is combined using the CM fusion for track decision-level analysis to aid in the joint assessment of the track quality. CM fusion enables the estimation of the combined quality of the distributed tracking scenario and can be used for any fidelity metrics based on cardinality. In a distributed multisensor multitarget scenario, we demonstrate the fidelity metric CM fusion for enhanced tracking performance evaluation.

Nearly all applications include some form of access control (AC). AC is concerned with determining the allowed activities of legitimate users, mediating every attempt by a user to access a resource in the system. AC systems come with a wide variety of features and administrative capabilities, and their operational impact can be significant. In particular, this impact can pertain to administrative and user productivity, as well as to the organizations ability to perform its mission. Therefore, it is reasonable to use quality metrics to verify the mechanical properties of AC systems. This document discusses the administration, enforcement, performance, and support properties of AC mechanisms that are embedded in each AC system. Because of the rigorous nature of the metrics and the knowledge needed to gather them, these metrics are intended to be used by AC experts who are evaluating the highest security AC systems.
