A technique for predicting vehicle misalignment, the relationship of vehicle misalign¬ment to the total vehicle/experiment integration effort, and the methodology used in performing a vehicle/experiment pointing compatiblity assessment, are presented. The technique is demonstrated in detail by describing how it was used on the Skylab Program.

To investigate the effect of energy spread, emittance, laser pulse shape andmisalignment on x-rays generated by Thomson backscattering using lasers as undulators, and their applications. (2) To address compact FEL issues. Formulate Thomson, also known as Compton, backscattered radiation for an electron beam with energy spread and finite emittance, laser undulator of arbitrary pulse shape and misalignment. This formulation is to be implemented on the computer. The computer code will be applied to a variety of experimental configurations including Vanderbilt and Duke FEL parameters. We will also evaluate other configurations and medical applications. For FELs to become a widely utilized laser source, they must become more compact, less expensive, and more user friendly.

The emittance dilution of a relativistic beam in a long linear accelerator caused by quadrupole misalignments is studied. First, an analytical formula is derived for the emittance dilution due random uncorrelated offsets of the quadrupoles in a FODO lattice for a beam of constant energy. It is shown that there is a critical length of the linac below which the emittance growth scales as N3 with the number of quadrupoles. For linacs longer than the critical, the emittance dilution scales linearly with N. Analytical results are obtained for the residual emittance growth after lattice alignment as a function of the resolution of the beam position monitors and mover steps. The results are also generalized for a FODO lattice and a beam with slowly varying parameters. They are compared with computer simulations for the NLC.

Misalignment accommodating connector assembly for removably connecting first and second objects which may comprise: a first connector subassembly having an arm member extending therefrom transversely through which is provided a tubular member; a second connector subassembly having a pair of spaced apart arm members each of which is provided with a transversely disposed coaxially aligned semi-cylindrical recess for receiving opposite ends of the first connector tubular member upon lateral insertion of the first connector arm member into the space between the second connector pair of arm members. An axially extendable and contractible fastener subassembly carried by the first connector tubular member is extendable to allow insertion or removal of the first connector arm member into or from the space between the second connector pair of arm members and contractible when the opposite ends of the tubular member are substantially received by the semi-cylindrical recesses of the pair of spaced apart arm members to lock the first and second connector subassemblies together.

It extends the work done by Jablon and Widrow by utilizing a priori knowledge of the desired signal direction to generate new soft constraints on the pattern of the array. (rh)

Broadband phase retrieval needed when: (a) Narrow spectral filters are unavailable. (b) Dim sources. (c) Low throughput due to misalignment. (d) Short exposures times. i.e., Pointing instability (space); and Atmospheric instability (ground based AO). Traditional approach is computationally burdensome for extreme bandwidths. Approximate approach: (a) Substitute monochromatic model. (b) Blur model and data. Test case performance: (a) approx. 270x reduction in computational cost for FGS-like test case. (b) Good accuracy for monolithic system. (c) Acceptable accuracy for segmented systems. i.e., Reduced by diffraction and Reduced by higher order segment model.

This report documents the testing of a rotating bayonet assembly. It provides the details of how the test was carried out and the results of the testing. The testing was done on a mock up of an 1 1/2-inch x 3-inch gaseous argon bayonet assembly designed to allow a translational movement of 40-inches. The test was necessary to provide a level of confidence in the design concept. The testing was a success. It provided confidence that the bayonet assembly design will work for the 1 1/2-inch x 3-inch pipe size. No leaks were detected during any of the testing. The o-ring seals did not leak when the bayonet assembly was misaligned. The force required to move the assembly was 15 to 60+ pounds force. This seems reasonable. No binding was observed with the misalignments. The misalignments were up to 2.7 degrees from true vertical. This misalignment is noticeable to the casual observer and should be greater than carefully installed field piping. The goal of the rotary bayonet assembly test was to: (1) Determine that the seals in the bayonet are sealing while it is being rotated; (2) Determine the effect misalignment of the bayonets from a true vertical has on the tightness of the o-rings; (3) Get an idea of the magnitude of the forces involved when exercising the assembly with misalignment; (4) Get an idea of how much misalignment can be tolerated; and (5) Provide a level of confidence that the rotary bayonet concept will work as intended in the D-Zero cryogenic system.

We present and analyze a new M' detection of the young exoplanet Beta Pictoris b from 2008 VLT/NaCo data at a separation of approx. = 4 AU and a high signal-to-noise rereduction of L' data taken in December 2Q09. Based on our orbital analysis, the planet's orbit is viewed almost perfectly edge-on (i approx. 89 degrees) and has a Saturn-like semimajor axis of 9.50AU(+3.93 AU)/-(1.7AU) . Intriguingly, the planet's orbit is aligned with the major axis of the outer disk (Omega approx.31 degrees) but probably misaligned with the warp/inclined disk at 80 AU often cited as a signpost for the planet's existence. Our results motivate new studies to clarify how Beta Pic b sculpts debris disk structures and whether a second planet is required to explain the warp/inclined disk

Face-milled spiral bevel gears with uniform tooth height are considered. An approach is proposed for the design of low-noise and localized bearing contact of such gears. The approach is based on the mismatch of contacting surfaces and permits two types of bearing contact either directed longitudinally or across the surface to be obtained. A Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) computer program was developed. This analysis was used to determine the influence of misalignment on meshing and contact of the spiral bevel gears. A numerical example that illustrates the developed theory is provided.
