We discuss the characteristics and perspectives of JUNO, a huge reactor antineutrino experiment, with a very high energy resolution, designed to perform measurements relevant for particle physics and astrophysics. Its main goal is the determination (at 3-4 σ of confidence level) of neutrino mass ordering. JUNO should also significantly reduce the uncertainty on different mass and mixing parameters; it will have an high sensitivity to supernova neutrinos and it will study geoneutrinos and probably atmospheric neutrinos. The JUNO detection of ~8B and ~7Be solar neutrinos will contribute to the solar metallicity study and to test the LMA oscillation pattern, looking for signals of potential Non-Standard Interactions.

Shared service centres (SSCs) are an organisational arrangement to deliver services. During SSC development organisations encounter a variety of challenges affecting its success or failure. Yet in this embryonic research field a systematic insight into management challenges is absent. Drawing on literature a taxonomy of 15 challenges is suggested that are illustrated with three case studies. Resource dependence, efficiency, population and knowledge perspectives are used as complementary views to provide a deeper understanding. Based on these four perspectives change management has to deal with resource dependencies and power struggles, achieving efficiency by minimising and managing costs, achieving survival in the long run within turbulent organisational environments and finally coordinating knowledge integration. Our results show that the (degree of importance of the) challenges encountered vary per situation. We argue that it is imperative to combine the theoretical perspectives to attain a richer understanding of the situation at hand. Our findings can be used as a solid basis for attaining an elaborate theory for the development of SSCs to mitigate implementation risks by managers.

The genus Pistacia consists of 11 species and one hybrid of deciduous trees and evergreen shrubs. The evolution of the genus Pistacia and the relationships among its species is presented from paleobotanical, archaeological, historical, and ethnobotanical perspectives. Pistacia trees and their products have accompanied human culture since ancient times. The accumulating data hint at untapped potential of the genus in the environmental, agricultural, and biotechnological fields. Recent modern research has revealed medicinally useful compounds in Pistacia gum, resin, and in solvent extracts. Also, many of Pistacia nutritional qualities are awaiting further research.

Changes are proposed to improve urban water supply systems around the globe. Improvement in service delivery mechanisms, institutional efficiency, financial viability and acceptance by users are the key criteria for initiating and sustaining a change. To improve the situation of water supply in Karachi, Pakistan, advised by the World Bank, a private sector participation (PSP) strategy was formed during the 1990s. The strategy aimed to promote a gradual increase of PSP in water and sanitation services. The proposed project faced strong resistance from stakeholders, mainly civil society, leading to its suspension. Efforts are being made to revive the PSP and to make it acceptable to the stakeholders concerned. The paper documents and analyses the stakeholders' response to the anticipated PSP process and the possible social and economic impacts. The study makes a contribution in the areas of participation and consensus building in the context of PSP. Willingness to negotiate continuously and even consideration of possible alternatives based on the changing situations are the key to any way forward for sustainable improvements.

The present essay investigates the potential of generative representation applied to the study of relief perspective architectures realized in Italy between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In arts, and architecture in particular, relief perspective is a three-dimensional structure able to create the illusion of great depths in small spaces. A method of investigation applied to the case study of the Avila Chapel in Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome (Antonio Gherardi 1678) is proposed. The research methodology can be extended to other cases and is based on the use of a Relief Perspective Camera, which can create both a linear perspective and a relief perspective. Experimenting mechanically and automatically the perspective transformations from the affine space to the illusory space and vice versa has allowed us to see the case study in a different light.

Following its discovery in fifteenth-century Italy,linear perspective has often been hailed as the most accurate method of projecting three-dimensional visual space onto a two-dimensional picture plane. However,when we survey the history of European art it is evident that few artists fully complied with its mathematical rules,despite many of them being rigorously trained in its procedures. In this paper,we will consider how artists have actually depicted visual space,and present evidence that images created according to a “natural” perspective (NP) used by artists are judged as better representations of visual space than those created using standard linear (LP) and curvilinear fisheye (FP) projective geometries. In this study,we built a real three-dimensional scene and produced photographs of the scene in three different perspectives (NP,LP and FP). An online experiment in which we asked people to rank the perspectives in order of preference showed a clear preference for NP compared to the FP and LP. In a second experiment,participants were asked to view the real scene and rate each perspective on a range of psychological variables. Results showed that NP was the most preferred and the most effective in depicting the physical space naturally. We discuss the implications of these results and the advantages and limitations of our approach for studying the global metric and geometrical structure of visual space.

In general, the issue of climate change is characterized by uncertainty, complexity, and multiface-tedness. In the Netherlands, climate change is in above highly controversial. These characteristics make it difficult to realize adaptation measures that are perceived as legitimate. In this article, we analyze the main difficulties and dilemmas with regard to the issue of legitimacy in the context of climate adaptation. We conceptualize legitimacy from a legal, a planning, and a network perspective and show how the concept of legitimacy evolves within these three perspectives. From a legal perspective, the focus is on the issues of good governance. From a planning perspective, the focus is on the flexibility, learning, and governance capacity. From a network perspective, issues of dialogue, involvement, and support are important. These perspectives bring in different criteria, which are not easy compatible. We describe and illustrate these legitimacy challenges using an in-depth study of the Dutch IJsseldelta Zuid case. From our case study, we conclude that, from a legitimacy perspective, the often acclaimed necessity to be adaptive and flexible is quite problematic. The same holds true for the plea to mainstream adaptation into other policy domains. In our case study, these strategies give rise to serious challenges in relation to good governance and consensus-two indispensable cornerstones of legitimacy.

Librarianship is at a critical juncture. Technological changes have reshaped the information landscape, but libraries as social institutions have not been able to transform themselves to keep pace. This is the challenge of Library and Information Science Education. As we look to a future professional education for librarians, we need to acknowledge the need to reinvent our educational goals and methods so our graduates can lead in this new emerging environment. A relevant education for the information sectors will include a synthesis of global, technical, and critical perspectives to encourage librarians to understand the changes they need to enact to ensure relevance for the future.
