Anthracnose occurred frequently on leaf sheaths of Welsh onions grown in Gangwha island, Korea in November, 2007. The disease incidence was as high as 30%, in five fields investigated. A total of 20 single spore isolates of Colletotrichum species were obtained from the affected plants, and all the isolates were identified as Colletotrichum circinans based on their morphological and cultural characteristics, Three isolates of the fungus caused anthracnose symptoms on the leaf sheaths of Welsh onionsby artificial inoculation, which were similar to those observed during the field survey. In this study, the mycological and pathological characteristics of C. circinans identified as causing anthracnose of Welsh onions are clarified.

A macro- and microscopic description and cultivational characteristics are given. Also physiological studies were performed. These included measuring of extracellular ligninolytic enzymes and monitoring of protein and glucose concentration in media. Its placement in the genus Gerronema in the recent sense is proven using molecular methods.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica has been recognised as an occasional but serious opportunistic bacterial pathogen to human beings. Recently, it was frequently isolated from tiger frog, Rana tigerina rugulosa, with cataract disease, which is the most common disease of unknown aetiology of frogs in Hainan, China. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise the bacterial strains isolated from the recent outbreaks of cataract disease in farmed tiger frog in Hainan, China, and to evaluate their pathogenicity to the frog and their sensitivity to 20 chemotherapeutic agents.The 165 rRNA gene sequences of strains W0701 (1478 bp), W0702 (1477 bp) and W0703 (1478 bp) showed 98.6-98.7% similarity with the sequence of E. meningoseptica type strain (ATCC 13253) and 99.9-100% similarity with that of E. meningoseptica NTU 870424-IL. Six strains (W0701-W0706) were selected to represent 24 isolates retrieved from six moribund frogs. The morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of the six representative isolates were consistent with those of E. meningoseptica strains. The organisms were only susceptible to vancomycin and moderately susceptible to cefoperazone among the 20 investigated chemotherapeutic agents. Virulence test with strain W0702 was conducted and pathogenicity (by intramuscular injection) was demonstrated in the tiger frog. In conclusion, 24 isolates obtained from frogs with cataract disease were the E. meningoseptica strains highly pathogenic to tiger frog, and this is the first report of E. meningoseptica as a pathogen for tiger frog.

The effects of fat replacers (Simplesse (R) D-100, N-Lite D, and inulin) on the melting characteristics, overruns, hardness, rheological parameters and sensory attributes of reduced (RF, 60.0 g/kg), low (LF, 40.0 g/kg), and nonfat (NF, 1.0 g/kg) ice creams were investigated. The magnitudes of the melting rates were in the order RF > LF > NF for samples that contained Simplesse (R) D-100 or inulin, but the reverse order was found for samples with N-Lite D. The nonfat ice creams had lowest overrun values of around 10%. Inulin-containing ice creams possessed higher overrun values than others (P > 0.05). The use of fat replacer decreased the hardness of ice creams. All ice cream samples showed pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) behavior. The addition of N-Lite D and inulin decreased the flow behaviour index of ice cream samples. The reduced and low fat ice cream samples were rated as similar to the control by a sensory panel. On the other hand, no correlations (P > 0.05) were observed between rheological parameters and sensory texture and mouthfeel.

H The global dynamics of the flow of energetic particles through the Martian upper atmosphere is studied for different cases reflecting variations in solar cycle, seasons, and epochs over history. In this study, the combination of the new 3-D Direct Simulation Monte Carlo kinetic model and the modern 3-D Mars Thermosphere General Circulation Model is employed to describe self-consistently the Martian upper atmosphere (i.e., the thermosphere/ionosphere and the exosphere). The variations in the Martian upper atmosphere over long-term (seasons and solar cycle) and evolutionary (Martian history) time scales are presented and discussed using the equinox solar low case extensively described in the work of Valeille et al. (2009c) as reference throughout. These characteristic conditions lead to significant variations in the thermosphere/ionosphere temperatures, dynamical heating, winds, and ion/neutral density distributions, which, in turn, affect the exosphere general structure, the hot corona shape, and the escape rate and have important implications for the study of the ion loss, atmospheric sputtering, and interaction with the solar wind in general. Calculations for present conditions are performed for three characteristic seasons (aphelion, equinox, and perihelion), while solar activity is either fixed to low or high conditions. Calculations for past conditions are related to a solar EUV flux enhancement of 1, 3, and 6 times the present values. Spatial-, seasonal-, solar cycle-, and evolutionary-driven variations, although exhibiting very different time scales, are all shown to exert an influence of the same order. Models of Mars upper atmosphere should address them accordingly.

The characteristics of plasma generated by hypervelocity impact were studied through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Based on thermodynamics and statistical physics, a thermal ionization model was proposed to explore the relationships of ionization degree and plasma conductivity to temperature with consideration of the velocity distribution law in the thermodynamic equilibrium state. In order to derive the temperature, internal energy, and density of the plasma generated by the impact for the above relationships, a 3-D model for the impact of an aluminum spherical projectile on an aluminum target was established and five cases with different impact angles were numerically simulated. Then, the temperature calculated from the internal energy and the Thomas Fermi (TF) model, the internal energy and the density of the plasma were put into the function of the ionization degree to study the characteristics of plasma. Finally, based on the experimental data, a good agreement was obtained between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results, and the feasibility of this theoretical model was verified.

To investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics of sea-ice resource, we used sea-ice volume to measure the amount of sea-ice resource in the Bohai Sea, China. The sea-ice area was extracted from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) remote-sensing images using the zonal threshold method. The sea-ice thickness was estimated using a sea-ice model based on shortwave radiation theory and field measurements. The spatio-temporal characteristics of sea-ice volume were then analysed using GIS technology. The results indicate that the Bohai Sea experienced two sea-ice volume peaks in winter 2009/10. The largest sea-ice volume was in Liaodong Bay (~80.26% of the entire sea-ice volume of the Bohai Sea). Bohai Bay had the second largest ice volume, and Laizhou Bay the smallest. The relationship between sea-ice volume and distance from shore is essentially exponential. The proportion of total sea-ice volume that is 0–10km from shore is~42.43%, whereas the proportion that is 100–110km from shore is only 0.002%.
