The present article is limited to research studies focused on understanding the phenomenon and construction of the concept of Self.' When we look at one's experience of the Self, as a whole, it involves various components associated with different aspects like self-identification, self-location and the sense of the existence of oneself or the sense of Self. While exploring the Self phenomenon, many scientific studies consider only partial aspects of the experience, and hence any understanding resulting from such an evaluation makes it difficult to comment on the nature of the Self. We emphasize that while studying the Self, to understand it totally, one would need to include all the components of the Self. In this connection, we raise the following two theses: a) Ontologically, the Self is conceived as a sentient entity, the bearer of the what it is like to be type of feeling, and b) Phenomenologically, we do not have a direct apprehension of the Self, but experience various aspects of the Self through the Senses of Existence, Identification, and Location.

This study addresses the locational puzzle concerning the optimization of firm and residential locations faced by highly educated self-employed entrepreneurs. In contrast to employees, the self-employed have considerable leverage in changing theirfirm location, which gives them an additional option-apart from a residential move-to resolve household locational issues. Two results stand out. First, firms are generally located very close to the residential location. This reinforces the idea that entrepreneurship is a local event. Second, if other economic activities need to be considered, firm relocation is often used to resolve the locational puzzle.

Self-cutting as a form of self-harm is a common and multifaceted phenomenon among adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the location of self-cutting (arms or other areas of the body) could help to assess the severity of the underlying psychiatric problems. A sample of adolescents who reported self-cutting (n = 440) was drawn from a large sample of community adolescents (n = 4,019). The majority of self-cutting adolescents, 296 (67.2 %), reported cutting only the upper arms, while 144 (32.8 %) also cut other parts of the body. The data included a structured self-rating questionnaire, questions about self-cutting, the Youth Self-Report (YSR) for adolescents aged 11-18 years, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (A-DES). The results indicate that self-cutting on other parts of body than the arms was associated with female gender, a wide range of emotional and dissociative symptoms and suicidal ideation. In logistic regression analysis, the most pronounced association between self-cutting on other places than the arms was found with YSR subscales withdrawn/depressed, social problems and thought problems, and dissociation (A-DES). We conclude that self-cutting adolescents, mostly girls, with wounds elsewhere than on the arms present with the most serious psychiatric symptoms. It is important to perform a careful physical examination when an adolescent has unexplained wounds or scars on the arms or on other parts of the body. These adolescents also need a caring and conscientious psychiatric examination and possible psychiatric treatment.

In this paper, three shortages: full-enhancement mechanism, invariable texture extraction mechanism, and lack of robust enhancement methods, that are always neglected in some tasks based on texture-based target location for Intelligent Transportation System applications (ITS) are introduced. To cover these shortages, a self-Adaptive model for texture-based target location is established. It is mainly composed of self-Adaptive enhancement mechanism, self-Adaptive texture extraction mechanism, and graying enhancement. Also, feedback evaluation strategy for design of texture extraction modes, needed by self-Adaptive texture extraction mechanism, is provided. And then, an algorithm of license plate location is designed to evaluate effectiveness of this model. 338 license plate images from natural scenes were applied to test graying enhancement and self-Adaptive location. Results of enhancement experiment indicate that graying enhancement is robust in purposiveness, real-time performance, and empirical parameter independence, simultaneously. Further, Results of location experiment demonstrate that not only a sound algorithm of license plate location with high success rate (96.1%) and low average execution time (52 ms) is given but also the effectiveness of the two self-Adaptive mechanisms in the proposed model are validated.

I suggest a way of extending Stalnaker’s account of assertion to allow for centered content. In formulating his account, Stalnaker takes the content of assertion to be uncentered propositions: entities that are evaluated for truth at a possible world. I argue that the content of assertion is sometimes centered: the content is evaluated for truth at something within a possible world. I consider Andy Egan’s proposal for extending Stalnaker’s account to allow for assertions with centered content. I argue that Egan’s account does not succeed. Instead, I propose an account on which the contents of assertion are identified with sets of multi-centered worlds. I argue that such a view not only provides a plausible account of how assertions can have centered content, but also preserves Stalnaker’s original insight that successful assertion involves the reduction of shared possibilities.

The current paper aims to enrich the current understanding of the link between the choice of residential location, the propensity to cycle to work and the propensity to cycle for non-commuting purposes. To highlight the relationship among these choice dimensions we used a composite econometric model that allows for the joint modelling of multiple outcomes. Residential location and cycling propensities are modelled as a function of socio-demographic and level-of-service variables. The inclusion of common error terms allows us to control for self-selection and unobserved effects that can simultaneously influence the underlying propensities. The data for this study is drawn from a survey conducted in the metropolitan areas of Cagliari and Sassari (Sardinia, Italy) in 2016 among a sample of local employees. The sample comprises 2,128 observations. Our results indicate that a significant portion of unobserved variance between the residential location choice and the propensity to cycle for non-commuting reasons exists, suggesting the presence of a self-selection effect.

We consider the problem of node positioning in ad hoc networks. We propose a distributed, infrastructure-free positioning algorithm that does not rely on GPS (Global Positioning System). Instead, the algorithm uses the distances between the nodes to build a relative coordinate system in which the node positions are computed in two dimensions. Despite the distance measurement errors and the motion of the nodes, the algorithm provides sufficient location information and accuracy to support basic network functions. Examples of applications where this algorithm can be used include Location Aided Routing [10] and Geodesic Packet Forwarding [2]. Another example are sensor networks, where mobility is less of a problem. The main contribution of this work is to define and compute relative positions of the nodes in an ad hoc network without using GPS. We further explain how the proposed approach can be applied to wide area ad hoc networks.

Bodily self-consciousness (BSC) refers to experience of one's self as located within an owned body (self-identification) and as occupying a specific location in space (self-location). BSC can be altered through multisensory stimulation, as in the Full Body Illusion (FBI). If participants view a virtual body from a distance being stroked, while receiving synchronous tactile stroking on their physical body, they feel as if the virtual body were their own and they experience, subjectively, to drift toward the virtual body. Here we hypothesized that - while normally the experience of the body in space depends on the integration of multisensory body-related signals within a limited space surrounding the body (i.e. peripersonal space, PPS) - during the FBI the boundaries of PPS would shift toward the virtual body, that is, toward the position of experienced self-location. To test this hypothesis, we used synchronous visuo-tactile stroking to induce the FBI, as contrasted with a control condition of asynchronous stroking. Concurrently, we applied an audio-tactile interaction paradigm to estimate the boundaries of PPS. PPS was measured in front of and behind the participants' body as the distance where tactile information interacted with auditory stimuli looming in space toward the participant's physical body. We found that during synchronous stroking, i.e. when participants experienced the FBI, PPS boundaries extended in the front-space, toward the avatar, and concurrently shrunk in the back-space, as compared to the asynchronous stroking control condition, when FBI was induced. These findings support the view that during the FBI, PPS boundaries translate toward the virtual body, such that the PPS representation shifts from being centered at the location of the physical body to being now centered at the subjectively experienced location of the self.
