Purpose Substantial research has examined the self-concept, but little work has investigated the contents and structure of the self-concept in combination within performance settings, particularly from a within-person perspective. Thus, this research developed and examined a conceptual framework based on Greenwald et al. (2002) to understand how core self-evaluations (CSE) and self-concept clarity (SCC) interact to influence motivational orientation with implications for performance dimensions. Design/methodology/approach Full-time employees (N = 138) completed daily measures of CSE, SCC, motivational orientation, organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) over the course of three weeks. Findings Multilevel modeling indicated CSE influences motivational orientation, SCC can moderate these relationships and motivational orientation relates to OCBs and counterproductive work behaviors. Originality/value This work contributes to this research area by developing and examining an integrative conceptual framework involving aspects of self-concept, motivation and performance from a within-person perspective.

This study explores the extent and nature of academic peer reputation effects upon children’s academic self-concept in a sample of 151 children (average age 11 years 9 months). Peer and self-perceptions of academic ability and affect (liking) were assessed for the subject domains of English, math, and science in order to investigate the generality of peer reputation influences across academic subject areas, and to determine the extent to which gender differences might be evident. Multiple regression analyses provided some support for this stereotype-based gender-congruency hypothesis, as it was primarily children’s academic ability reputation in the gender-stereotype-congruent areas that was predictive of ability self-concept, and, influential with respect to self-perceived ability in genderstereotypical and counter-stereotypical domains. Contrary to expectations, peer affective reputation was more predictive with respect to traditionally counter stereotypic, (gender-stereotype-incongruent) domains. Results tend to suggest the dominance of gender-stereotype consistency effects in relation to ability perceptions, but contrast effects in relation to school affect.

Self-concept is a widely examined construct in the area of psychiatric disorders. This study compared the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) scores of adolescents with psychiatric disorders (N=103) with the results of a matched group of non-clinical adolescents (N=103). Self-concept and Physical self-concept were lower in the clinical than in the non-clinical group. Girls (N=59) scored lower than boys (N=44) in both groups. In the different diagnostic groups specific domains were affected in line with symptomatology, which has implications for therapy.

My Multiple Selves (MMS) is an open-ended self-concept measure that leads respondents to systematically explore who they are before selecting and rank-ordering their most important selves. A sample of college students ( n = 204) completed either the MMS or the frequently used Twenty Statements Test (TST). As predicted, results demonstrated that MMS responses included elements underdetected by the TST: other people, school crowd labels, aspirations for the future, and undesirable selves. Furthermore, the MMS revealed that when other people are included in self, they are rank ordered by participants as the most important element. Shortcomings of the MMS are discussed, and directions for future research outlined.

Limb reconstruction is a procedure that is increasingly being used within the field of orthopaedics. The procedure involves surgical intervention, the application of external fixation and extensive rehabilitation. There is a great deal of research into the physiological aspects of care, but research into the psycho-social aspects of the treatment is limited, much of the literature consists of reviews or anecdotal accounts of practice. It was therefore, decided to undertake an evaluation survey using the Tennessee self-concept scale to identify the extent to which the total, physical, social, personal, family, work and behavioural elements of the self-concept were affected during treatment.A population of clients (n = 60) undergoing limb reconstruction procedures withinan inner-city teaching hospital were selected for inclusion in the study and assessedusing the scale. Overall it was found that mean scores relating to the total self-concept and the physical, social, personal, family, work and behavioural sub-scaleswere quite poor and supported the views of previous writers. This study provides anempirical basis for the existence of these problems in the client group.

Purpose The physical self-concept (PSC) refers to the knowledge, feelings, memories, and experiences a person refers to his/her body and it is one of the crucial constructs aimed at describing a person's subjective perception of his/her own fitness, health, appearance, and physical activity (PA). This study had a threefold purpose: (1) to assess the measurement invariance of the PSC across people with and without blindness, (2) to analyze the specific dimensions of the PSC related to global physical self and self-esteem, and (3) to evaluate the relationship between PA and PSC dimensions in participants with and without blindness. Methods Eighty-five people with blindness and 121 persons without blindness voluntarily participated in the study. Participants with blindness were assessed through a structured interview, whereas sighted participants completed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Structural equation modeling and MANOVA analyses were performed. Results Measurement invariance of the instrument assessing PSC across people with and without blindness was confirmed. For participants with blindness, global physical self was significantly associated with PA, appearance, and strength, whereas global self-esteem was related to global physical self and appearance. With respect to sighted participants, global physical self was related with appearance, body fat, sport competence, and strength, while global self-esteem was associated with global physical self, appearance, coordination, and health. Finally, participants who practiced PA 2 h/week or more reported higher scores on the PA dimension of PSC, as well as on coordination, and sport competence dimensions if compared with participants engaged in PA for less than 2 h/week both in participants with and without blindness. Conclusions Results proved the PSDQ-S to be a reliable measure to investigate differences among people with and without blindness, and this allowed us to rely on the differences emerged between the two groups. As expected, people with blindness showed a more restricted number of specific PSC dimensions associated with physical self and self-esteem, if compared with sighted persons; PA was positively associated with the PSC dimensions both in participants with and without blindness.

Aim: This study was carried out in order to determine professional self-concept and professional values in the students, who were studying in the final year of the nursing department in schools providing undergraduate education in the Inner Anatolia Region. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 619 senior students of nursing departments in the Inner Anatolia Region. Data were collected using a Student Information Form, Professional Self-Concept Scale for the Student Nurses, and The Nurses' Professional Values Scale. Descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, the t-test, analysis of variance, and the Bonferroni tests were used for data analysis. Ethical Considerations: A written consent was obtained from Ethics Board of Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine and from nursing schools participating in the study. Prior to data collection, students were informed about the purpose of the study and gave written and verbal consents. Participation in the study was on voluntary basis. Findings: In the study, students' total and sub-dimension scores from the Professional Self-Concept Scale for the Student Nurses and total scores from the Nurses' Professional Values Scale were moderately high. It was detected that women received higher scores than men from the sub-dimension of professional attributes; the students who had positive perception of the nursing image and voluntarily selected their department received high scores from professional satisfaction, professional competence, and professional attributes sub-dimensions of the Professional Self-Concept Scale for the Student Nurses (p < 0.001).

Background: General self-concept refers to a set of feelings and perceptions toward oneself, and sexual self-concept is defined as individual's perception of his/her sexual feelings and actions. These two concepts are affected by various life problems, including infertility. The present study aimed to determine?correlation of general self-concept and sexual self-concept in infertile women. Methods: The descriptive correlational study was carried out on all infertile women who visited the Gorgan Infertility Center in 2018. Overall, 105 eligible infertile women were included in the study via convenience sampling. Data were collected using Persian versions of the Rogers self-concept questionnaire and the Snell sexual self-concept questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Pearson and Spearman's correlation tests in SPSS 16 and at significance of 0.05. Results: Mean age of subjects was 28.88±5.14 years (range: 17 and 40 years). Based on the findings, 19% of the participants had normal general self-concept, 31.4% had moderate self-concept, and 49.5% had weak self-concept. Mean scores of positive sexual self-concept, negative self-concept and situational sexual self-concept were 118.9±24.85, 13.33±8.94 and 41.98±10.53, respectively. There was no correlation between general self-concept and different dimensions of sexual self-concept of the infertile women. Conclusion: Due to the lack of correlation between general self-concept and sexual self-concept in infertile women, it is suggested to conduct evaluations and interventions on the general and sexual self-concepts of the participants separately.

In the current report, we also examine (a) reliability of the 10-item scale score, (b) measurement invariance based on respondents’ sexual identity status and age group, and (c) correlations with preexisting surveys that purport to measure similar constructs and theoretical correlates. Evidence for internal reliability, measurement invariance (based on respondent sex), and convergent validity was also investigated in an independent, validation sample. The lowest SSA scores were reported by women who self-ascribed an exclusively heterosexual or exclusively lesbian/gay sexual identity, whereas those who reported a bisexual, mostly lesbian/gay , or mostly heterosexual identity, reported relatively higher SSA scores.]]>
