An analysis of the relationship between potato prices and potato production is important for understanding industry developments. The analysis of the effect of potato production on potato prices was presented in two AJPR articles: Pavlista and Feuz (American Journal of Potato Research 82:339-343, 2005) and Loy et al. (American Journal of Potato Research 85:438-444, 2011). The articles estimated inverse potato demand in the U.S. and Germany, respectively, during the period of 1980-2003. They hypothesized that the potato price response to changes in potato production may be affected by a shift in consumer demand towards increasing consumption of processed potatoes in the U.S. and by socio-economic changes in Germany. This paper extends the existing research by analyzing the recent price developments in the U.S. potato industry. With increased potato production in the past decade, actual price for potatoes given to growers has changed little, which means that inflation-adjusted price has decreased. Since production is the result of acres harvested and yield per acre, these two parameters to price are key to understanding price fluctuation. To quantify the relation between potato price and production, acreage and yield, NASS data from 1980 to 2002 were analyzed using linear regressions. Pricing and production showed an inverse, linear relationship, which is divided into two periods. Between 1980 and 1988, the price of potatoes (US$/cwt1) increased by $ 1.00 with a decrease in production of 15.6 million cwt, and between 1993 and 2002 with a decrease in production of 35.7 million cwt. Prices have become less responsive to changes in production. Harvested acres account for about onethird of the annual variation in prices, while yield per acre accounts for about one-half of the variability in prices. It appears that there was an increase in demand for potatoes from 1989 to 1992 that divides the two periods. There also was an increase in the percentage of the crop being used in the frozen and fry market, and a decrease in the percentage of the crop being used in the table or fresh market during this time period. This market change could explain the difference between 1980-1988 and 1993-2002 relationships.

The advantages of self propelled potato harvesters are discussed in general and the Terra Melix 4-row machine is introduced. The harvesting unit build by Holmer is assembled on a sugarbeet undercarriage. The unit is wheeled with 6 low pressure terra tyres. Result from the 2002 and 2003 harvesting campaign show low potato tuber damage and high productivity. Under good conditions 1.2 ha/h were harvested. Higher haulage capacity is needed take over the potatoes. Two 18 t pneumatic trailers were used. Further improvements are needed to reduce problems with higher stone contents in the soil, however it is concluded that the future in potato harvesting is self-propelled machinery as it was with sugarbeet 20 years ago.

The demand on the German potato market has been under significant change in the last decades. The use of potatoes has shifted from consumption of table stock potatoes to processed potato products. Pavlista and Feuz (American Journal of Potato Research, 82:339-343, 2005) describe the same development for the U.S. potato market and show that the demand has become more elastic after this shift. We test this hypothesis for the German market and find almost the same impact on the elasticity of demand. However, as the German reunification coincides with the shift in demand, its impact is indistinguishable from the underlying hypothesis.

Protection of the environment is one of the most important issues of politics in many countries. The food industry generates large amounts of waste, which can be further managed using biotechnological processes. The potato industry is one of the branches which generates a huge amount of waste that is burdensome for the environment. In the production process of potato starch, chips and alcohol, the following wastes are formed: potato wastewater, potato pulp, peel, distillery wastewater and pulp. These wastes can then be managed as components of microbial media in the biotechnological production of cellular biomass of yeasts, microbial polysaccharides, protein and lipids, carotenoids, enzymes and organic acids. On the one hand, this allows for the reduction of costs of production of food components through microbial synthesis, and on the other, it enables the environmental management of industrial waste. The present article discusses the most important studies concerning the biotechnological management of wastes of the potato industry.

The potato plant is an important food source produced all over the world and it provides asignificant portion of daily energy intake in nourishment. In addition, a significant rate of vitamins,fibre, mineral matters, protein, and fat can be obtained by consuming potato. In this study, the production, consumption, and usage areas of potato, a crucial source of our diet, and the possibilities of usingit as food additives with the nutritional properties of its peel have been investigated. Generally, potatois consumed after its peel is removed in the homes and industrial areas and many of these peels aredisposed off as wastes. Studies show that potato peel has a high content of dietary fibre, protein, carbohydrate, mineral matters, vitamin, phenolic, and antioxidant. The use of potato peel as food additiveshave also been discussed in this study.

The article attempts to make a forecast of potato production in the period until 2020 using economic and statistical tools. The problem of food security is revealed through the achievement of threshold values for the production and self-sufficiency ofindividual products. For the production of potatoes, the threshold value of food security is set at 95%. It is important to understand the prospects and opportunities to achieve the established threshold values. The conducted economic and statistical analysis showed that by 2020 gross potato harvest in Western Europe, especially in Russia, will be at the levellof 30.2-35.5 mln t, and its yield, while maintaining current production conditions in the range of 164.4 to 177.4 centner/ha. The analysis showed that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the former Soviet republics completely underwent a process of adaptation to market conditions. Thus, the Baltic countries drastically reduced the volumes of potato production in connection with the harmonization of their agrarian policy with the pan-European one.

In 2004 the potato production area in Germany increased by 1% to 281 000 ha. The highest increases were in Niedersachsen with 5% for early potatoes and 4.4% increase for main potatoes. Decreases were recorded in certain regions like Bayern (-15%). The UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and France recorded also single digit increases of seed potato production areas. There were 22 important cultivars ( >1% of area) in the 2004 campaign. The following were grown on more than 3% of the area: Agria (6.6% or 1250 ha), Kuras (6.5%), Marabel (4.3%), Cilena (3.8%), Karlena (3.5%), Princess (3.5%) and Saturna (3.3%). Of the 17 new cultivars added in 2004, 3 were very early, 4 early, 6 semi-early (3 for table consumption and 3 for processing), 2 semi-late and 2 late cultivars for processing. Only five cultivars were removed from the German national list. Nematode resistance was present in 89.6% of registered cultivars in Germany. Full details of all 283 listed varieties in Germany is given in a tabulated format.

It is doubtful whether or not the work of those involved in the construction of destoners and washing equipment will ever be lauded in the annals of potato processing, but at least they get some credit in this article, which appears annually. Once again we take a look at the premise - and the practice of the art. One day, perhaps, in a Utopian vision that has yet to be realised, mankind will wake up to the fact that he is not only harming but actually endangering the environment. Rubbish and other debris are seemingly cast about the planet with reckless abandon. There seems to be little care expended upon disposing of one's waste - someone else can deal with that problem. And thus, little by little, the countryside becomes despoiled and no thoughtis given to the morrow. Once it used to be the cities which were polluted in this way but with the inexorable rise in transportation, so the problem has spread to the hinterlands and the open spaces beyond.
