Background. Moxibustion has been traditionally used to manage pain related to chronic diseases, including cancer. This study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion for relieving cancer pain in patients with metastatic cancer. Methods. A total of 16 patients were randomly divided into a true moxibustion (TM) group or a sham moxibustion (SM) group. In both groups, moxibustion was applied for 10 minutes, once daily for 7 consecutive days. In the SM group, the moxa cone was removed earlier than in the TM group, so as not to deliver heat stimulation completely into the skin. The changes of pain severity using the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and quality of life measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) were observed. A blinding credibility test was done to validate the sham moxibustion procedure. Results. The total BPI score significantly decreased in the TM group compared with the SM group (TM vs SM: -0.97 ± 1.05 vs 0.35 ± 0.60, P =.025). The 2 subsets of BPI, pain intensity score and pain interference score, also significantly decreased in the TM group (TM vs SM: intensity, -0.82 ± 0.93 vs 0.46 ± 0.87, P =.020; interference, -1.12 ± 1.31 vs 0.24 ± 0.61, P =.047). Even after adjusting for the values of opioid consumption, these results remained significant. FACT-G did not significantly improve in the TM group. The blinding to sham moxibustion was credible and no serious adverse events occurred. Conclusion. We suggest that moxibustion could be a safe and potential modality for cancer-related pain in patients with metastatic cancer. With the limitation of small sample size, a larger and long-term follow-up study is necessary to determine more definitely the efficacy of moxibustion.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between quantity of suppurative moxibustion and its effect on allergic asthma. Methods: The patients were randomly divided into suppurative moxibustion 9 cones group, 3 cones group and 6 cones group. The biggest area, scar-losing time, suppurating time and scarring time of post-moxibustion sore, and the clinical effects of each group were observed. Results: The biggest post-moxibustion sore area of 9 cones group was bigger than 3 cones group but had no difference with 6 cones group, and scar-losing time, suppurating time and scarring time of post-moxibustion sore of each group were of no difference. The clinical effects of 9 cones were better than 3 cones group but have no difference with 6 cones group. Conclusion: The quantity of suppurative moxibustion is in close association with the effects in the treatment of allergic asthma, and eventually becomes the key factor for good results.

Fifty-four patients with tubal inflammatory were treated by thunder-fire moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8), Guanyuan (CV 4) and Zhongji (CV 3) and the bilateral areas of the lower abdomen. As a result, 14 cases got cured, 19 cases were got a marked effect, 16 cases got an effect, 5 cases got no effect, the total effective rate was 90.7%.

Objectives: Moxibustion, a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique related to acupuncture, was proposed to facilitate cephalic version of breech presentation. Several trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy, but there are few reports on the safety of moxibustion. Our objective was to assess the side-effects and acceptability of this intervention.
Design: We are conducting a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of moxibustion for breech version. The first 12 participants randomized in the moxibustion group had additional fetal surveillance by electronic monitoring.
Subjects: Pregnant women with a fetus in breech presentation are included in the trial between 34 and 36 weeks of gestation.
Interventions: We performed a cardiotocogram during 10 minutes before, 20 minutes during, and 10 minutes after each session. A maximum of 9 sessions were scheduled every other day, and stopped when cephalic version was diagnosed. The recordings were assessed by 3 independent readers using the Fischer scoring system.
Outcome measures: Fetal well-being was evaluated by the cardiotocogram; effect on the mother was evaluated by blood pressure recorded before and after each session; maternal views, contractions, and perceived changes in fetal movements were assessed using a questionnaire.
Results: A total of 65 cardiotocograms were analyzed. All scores were considered as normal, being at 8 or more on a 0–10 scale. Acceptability for the women and compliance to the intervention were good. No significant maternal or fetal side-effect was observed.
Conclusions: We have not detected alterations of fetal and maternal well-being or other side-effects associated with moxibustion applied to the BL 67 for cephalic version of breech presentations. Moxibustion appears to be safe for both the mother and the fetus.

In this paper, authors have observed the effect of suspended moxibustion and He-Ne laser moxibustion on the discharge of 125 units which selected from 12 types of cutaneous receptors in rabbits. The temperature of suspended moxibustion was limited at 47-48℃. This moxibustion method can induce the excitatory reaction of every unit observed of thermoreceptor, Aδ and C poly- modal receptors; while for the down hair receptor, Merkel's tactile disk, Ruffini's corpuscle and C mechanonociceptor, it can produce an inhibition on part units of the receptors mentioned above which have spontaneous discharge; and the other 5 types of receptors all have no response to it.

Forty cases of hyperlipidemia were treated by herbal moxa stick moxibustion and compared with 22 cases treated by Oenothera Oil Capsules. The results showed that Lipid-Decreasing Herbal Moxibustion could decrease the serum cholesterol and triglyceride and elevate high-density lipoprotein and change the ratio of TC-HDL-C/HDL-C in the patients, and its therapeutic effect was better than that of the control group treated by Oenothera Oil Capsules (P < 0.01). Lipid-Decreasing Herbal Moxibustion can also improve the clinical symptoms and reduce the body weight.

MS96A type spectrum analyzer was applied to determine the spectral characteristic of near infrared radiated by moxa stick moxi-bustion, ginger-partitioned moxibustion, garlic-partitioned moxibustion and Aconium Carmichaeli-partitioned moxibustion. The spectrum of moxa stick moxibustion was relatively discrete and several wave crests are appeared. But in the spectrum of ginger-partitioned moxibustion, garlic-partitioned moxibustion or Aconium Carmichaeli-partitioned moxibustion, a specific and relatively steady wave crest formed respectively. It was concluded different indirect moxibustion could bring respective spectrum of near infrared and have the relevant physiologic and biochemical effects.

Gastric ulcer, a commonly frequently encountered disease, is called epigastralgia in the TCM. In modern medicine, it is caused by the infection of pylorus spiral bacillus, the gastric hyper- Protecting pastric mucous membrane, but the effect is not satisfactory. In this paper, thirty-four cases Of gastrelcoma were treated by moxibustion on the Zusanli (ST 36), Gongsun (SP ), Zhongwan (CV 12), and received a satisfactory therapeutic effect. The result showed that the therapeutic effect of the moxibrstion group was better than that of the medicine group.
