Many medical acupuncturists ignore the use of Extra Meridians in their methods of treatment. Even medical acupuncture textbooks—that is, many of them—tend to limit their discussions to the Conception and Governing vessels, ignoring other Extraordinary Vessels (as they are otherwise called). Some books even describe them as branches of the Principal Meridians. The fact is that these Extra Meridians develop soon after conception before the differentiation and development of Principal Meridians. Extra Meridians originate close to the Kidney-Dan Tian center, hold a position between the Dan Tian center and the Principal Meridians, and each Extra Meridian has connections to many Principal Meridians. This fact is taken advantage of in using them when there is involvement of multiple meridians; their usage reduces the number of points to be used significantly. In this article, an attempt is made to demystify these Extraordinary— "Wonder," "Exceptional," "Curious," or "Mysterious," Meridians and simplify their usage.

In 1884, the International Meridian Conference recommended that the prime meridian "to be employed as a common zero of longitude and standard of time-reckoning throughout the globe" pass through the "centre of the transit instrument at the Observatory of Greenwich". Today, tourists visiting its meridian line must walk east approximately 102 m before their satellite-navigation receivers indicate zero longitude. This offset can be accounted for by the difference between astronomical and geodetic coordinates-deflection of the vertical-in the east-west direction at Greenwich, and the imposed condition of continuity in astronomical time. The coordinates of satellite-navigation receivers are provided in reference frames that are related to the geocentric reference frame introduced by the Bureau International de l'Heure (BIH) in 1984. This BIH Terrestrial System provided the basis for orientation of subsequent geocentric reference frames, including all realizations of the World Geodetic System 1984 and the International Terrestrial Reference Frame. Despite the lateral offset of the original and current zero-longitude lines at Greenwich, the orientation of the meridian plane used to measure Universal Time has remained essentially unchanged.

Previous exploratory work has shown that groups of patients with the same pathology exhibit such characteristic patterns when limited numbers of acupuncture points are measured with the AcuGraph meridian energy measuring device. This study reports patterns of meridian energies observed in an exploratory assessment of different classes of patient with mental disturbance.

We consider the following questions: given a hyperbolic plane domain and a separation of its complement into two disjoint closed sets each of which contains at least two points, what is the shortest closed hyperbolic geodesic which separates these sets and is it a simple closed curve? We show that a shortest geodesic always exists although in general it may not be simple. However, one can also always find a shortest simple curve and we call such a geodesic a meridian of the domain. We prove that, although they are not in general uniquely defined, if one of the sets of the separation of the complement is connected, then they are unique and are also the shortest possible geodesics which separate the complement in this fashion.

In 1569,the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594),his name being a Latinised version of Gerard de Kremer, presented to the world a large printed planisphere with the title Nova et aucta orbis terrae descriptio ad usum navigantium emendate accomodate, that is, ‘New and enlarged description of the world properly adapted for use in navigation' (Figure 1). On this map, meridians are equally spaced and form, with the parallels, a rectangular mesh, in which the spacing between adjacent parallels increases with latitude in such a way that the proportion between the lengths of the parallel and meridian segments is everywhere equal to the one on the spherical surface of the Earth. This property implies that linear scale at every point does not vary with direction and that angles are conserved, making the projection conformal. An additional feature of extraordinary importance to marine navigation is that all rhumb lines - the curved tracks of constant course followed by ships at sea - are represented by straight segments making true angles with the meridians, a property that allows rhumb line courses to be directly read, traced and transported on a chart using a simple protractor and a ruler. Mercator's projection was a major achievement destined to change the history of cartography and navigation.
