Illustration-inspired techniques have provided alternative ways to visualize time-varying data. Techniques such as speedlines, flow ribbons, strobe silhouettes and opacity-based techniques provide temporal context to the current timestep being visualized. We evaluated the effectiveness of these illustrative techniques by conducting a user study. We compared the ability of subjects to visually, track features using snapshots, snapshots augmented by illustration techniques, animations, and animations augmented by illustration techniques. User accuracy, time required to perform a task, and user confidence were used as measures to evaluate the techniques. The results indicate that the use of illustration-inspired techniques provides a significant improvement in user accuracy and the time required to complete the task. Subjects performed significantly better on each metric when using augmented animations as compared to augmented snapshots.

The information provided about the artist is brief but enough to enable an art director to locate their website directly and get a sense of their work. Visual representation methods have long been used as tools to communicate information in health education settings, and their effect on improving health literacy has been investigated. The question arises: How should an illustration function in relation to the textual information it illustrates? Medical illustrations are likely to be featured in media such as brochures and textbooks. If the textual information in such materials is so complex, what function should illustrations play? We reviewed the sociological literature on illustrations to obtain findings potentially applicable to health education and the improvement of health literacy. We then evaluated these tools to determine the types of illustrations that are suitable for the information. Of the three topics for which we developed the materials—cancer, food allergies and HEV light—only for the HEV light topic were earlier findings replicated. One key factor behind this result was that the illustrations for the HEV topic underwent a more thorough deliberative process than those for the other two topics. The results of our study also highlight the importance of third-party opinion in the illustration design process.

The paper introduces a hand-drawn 360° illustration designed for commercial purposes in the framework of the project titled Venice Original. It focuses on different aspects of the creation of the artwork: the commissioning, the drawing technique, the connection to the e-commerce platform, and the several modalities of interaction. Subsequently, it gives an overview of the reception of the 360° interactive illustration on the e-commerce platform by different audiences, thanks to web statistics and user comments on the social networks. Finally, it presents the installation shown at the "Contingency" exhibition in the framework of the congress ARTECH 2021 in Aveiro, Portugal. The physical modality of the installation consisted of the original equirectangular drawing and physical paper spheres; the virtual one offered a VR tour of the illustrated space. The opinions gathered from conference attendants shed new light on the artwork, suggesting possible improvements and further developments.

Hatching lines are often used in line illustrations to convey tone and texture of a surface. In this paper we present methods to generate hatching lines from polygonal meshes and render them in high quality either at interactive rates for on-screen display or for reproduction in print. Our approach is based on local curvature information that is integrated to form streamlines on the surface of the mesh. We use a new algorithm that provides an even distribution of these lines. A special processing of these streamlines ensures high quality line rendering for both intended output media later on. While the streamlines are generated in a preprocessing stage, hatching lines are rendered either for vector-based printer output or on-screen display, the latter allowing for interaction in terms of changing the view parameters or manipulating the entire line shading model at run-time using a virtual machine.

In this paper, we present a novel two-dimensional (2D) shape context preserving image manipulation approach which constructs and manipulates a 2D mesh with a new differential mesh editing algorithm. We introduce a novel shape context descriptor and integrate it into the deformation framework, facilitating shape-preserving deformation for 2D anatomical illustrations. Our new scheme utilizes an analogy based shape transfer technique in order to learn shape styles from reference images. Experimental results show that visually plausible deformation can be quickly generated from an existing example at interactive frame rates. An experienced artist has evaluated our approach and his feedback is quite encouraging.

Background: The aim of this paper is to provide a depiction of the surgical technique and dynamic story behind the procedures in pediatric neurosurgery. Methods: Five standard common pediatric neurosurgeries: endoscopic third ventriculostomy, fronto-orbital advancement for metopic and coronal craniosynostoses, posterior fossa craniotomy, strip craniectomy for sagittal craniosynostosis, and ventriculoperitoneal shunting were chosen to be exampled in illustrations. Results: Surgical techniques were depicted in a step-by-step fashion with comic-like style of images. Illustrations enable to highlight specific surgical and anatomical features and also convey surgical procedures in a sequential order from beginning to end as if it is a story. Conclusion: Surgical illustrations may serve as an educational tool with potentially instructional value for practical application, especially for surgical trainees.
