Toxoneura paralia Ozerov, 1993 есть новый младший синоним Toxoneura usta (Meigen, 1830); Temnosira reducta Merz et Sueyoshi, 2002 есть новый младший синоним Toxoneura orientana (Kovalev, 1972). Дана таблица для определения родов и видов российских палло-птерид и данные по распростанению этих видов. Pallopteridae — небольшое семейство акалипт-ратных мух, насчитывающее в мировой фауне около 60 видов: около 45 видов (6 родов) вГоларкти-ке, 6 видов (5 родов) в Неотропической области и 10 видов (2 рода) в Австралазийской области [Merz, 1998].

Observations suggesting that mature larvae of some carrion flies (Piophilidae) tend to leap off carcasses during rain motivated an investigation of the ontogeny and possible functions of larval leaping behaviour and larval responses to two stimuli associated with rain: moisture and sound. These behaviours were investigated in larvae of Prochyliza xanthostoma Walker (Diptera: Piophilidae) by means of laboratory-and field observations and experiments. Mature larvae left their feeding substrates (rotting meat) in response to either moisture or rattling sound. The response to moisture was exhibited also by immature larvae. Once on the carcass surface, however, only mature larvae leaped off and pupated in the surrounding soil. The response to sound and the ability to leap only appeared late in larval development and were lost in the prepupal stage. Because rain may facilitate larval locomotion on carcass surfaces, and leaping appears to represent a more rapid and efficient means of leaving a carcass than creeping, these responses may reduce the metabolic costs and predation risks experienced by mature larvae moving to pupation sites in the soil. Thus, the ability to leap and the responses to moisture and sound may represent "ontogenetic adaptations" associated with a brief stage of larval development.

Platygaster hiemalis Forbes is an egg-larval parasitoid of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor Say, in the eastern U.S. Efforts to establish P. hiemalis in central Texas were unsuccessful following release of adult parasitoids over 3 years. From 1991-94, ca 61,000 adult P. hiemalis were released in fields of wheat, Triticum aestivum L., naturally infested with Hessian fly in Clay, Bosque and Milam Counties, Texas. Parasitism by P. hiemalis of Hessian fly puparia collected from these sites ranged from 0.3 to 1.1% while releases were being made. P. hiemalis was not recovered at any of the three locations after releases were discontinued. Populations of P. hiemalis established in field cages in the spring did not survive to the following spring in central Texas. Laboratory studies found that P. hiemalis did not complete development at 30 degrees and 35 degreesC, but died as larvae, pupae or adults inside the host puparium. In contrast, Hessian fly developed to the adult stage or diapaused in the larval stage at 30 degrees and 35 degreesC. Results suggest that high temperatures during the summer in central Texas may be lethal to P. hiemalis.

Epidemic episodes of T.b. rhodesiense sleeping sickness continue to be reported in Uganda with reports of an increase in sleeping sickness and the existence of human infective trypanosomes in domestic animals (Welburn et al. 2001; Waiswa, Olaho-Mukani & Katunguka-Rwa-kishaya, 2003). Trealment of livestock with trypanocidal drugs to clear the reservoir host (Olaho-Mukani. 2002) plus the application of pyrcthroid 'pour-ons' and sprays on livestock for purposes of protecting the herds against tsetse bites are among the methods used in the control of sleeping sickness in Uganda. These chemicals are used only on domestic animals and not on wild hosts, and yet some of the common wild animals like monitor lizards are suspected to be reservoirs for the human infective trypanosomes (Njagu et al., 1999). To facilitate proper use of the insecticides in the control of tsetse and trypanoso-miasis, it is important to identify animals from which tsetse draw their blood meals. The data generated can be used in designing optimal control measures for tsetse while designing strategies that are based on olfactory attractants. as these are very important in live-bait control technologies. Moreover, there are still no effective olfactory baits for riverine tsetse, which arc the major vectors for sleeping sickness (Saini and Hassanali, 1CIPE Newsletter. Internet source). Imidacloprid-treated spheres and several classes of insecticides were evaluated in field. and laboratory experiments to determine their effects on Rhagoletis mendax Curran adult behavioural activity and larval infestation in highbush blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosum L. (Ericaceae). In field tests, three treatments representing an attract-and-kill system (imidacloprid-treated spheres) and two classes of insecticides, including a naturalyte spinosad (SpinTor 2 SC) and organophosphates (Imidane/Malathion), were evaluated against an untreated control. Significantly more blueberry maggot puparia were collected from untreated (control) plots than from other treatments evaluated. there were no significant differences in larval infestation of berries collected from plots treated with imidaclopridtreated spheres, SpinTor 2 SC, and Imidane/Malathion. Less than 1% of the berries collected from imidacloprid-treated sphere plots and SpinTor 2 SC treated plots contained blueberry maggot larvae. In toxicity and fruit-injury studies, SpinTor 2 SC as well as additional compounds from various classes were evaluated, including a botanical [azadiractin (Ecozin 3%)], a particle film [kaolin clay (Suffound(TM) Wp)], and three neonicotinoids [imidacloprid (Provado 1.6 F), thiocloprid (Calypso 480 SC, and thiamethoxam (Platinum(TM) 2 SC and Actara(TM) 25 WG)]. SpinTor 2 SC exhibited a time lag (18 h) in reducing R. mendax activity. Ecozin 3% and Surround(TM) WP were ineffective in suppressing R. mendax adult activity, but numbers of larvae in Surround(TM) WP treated fruit were significantly reduced. The effectiveness of neonicotinoid insecticides varied initially but resulted in equivalent levels of mortality after 48 h compared with our conventional organophosphate treatment of Guthion 50 WP Oviposition scars on Provado 1.6 F treated plots were significantly more numerous than on plots treated with SpinTor 2 SC, Calypso 480 SC, Actara 25 WG, and Guthion 50 WP.
