Communication skills are essential to employment and to society's smooth functioning. Universities are a prime environment for students to learn and hone these skills. However, communication within the academy has historically been conceptualised narrowly due to logocentric forces. When students experience different communication modes, it tends to be in a siloed fashion where they learn about one skill at a time, leading to a fragmented, uneven experience. As such, this study seeks to understand how communication is defined, assessed, and supported in Australian university introduction to communication classes. It does this first through reviewing relevant unit outlines to see how they define and position communication by mode (written, spoken, or visual). Second, using a national survey, academics who coordinate relevant units provided more concrete details about how their units are structured, supported, and about barriers that exist for equipping communication students to work in today's multi-modal digital world.

Efforts worldwide have sought to lessen the agricultural and societal impact of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) mitigation in Kenya, Nepal, and Bangladesh by safeguarding affected regions’ food crops and livelihoods while preventing the spread of FAW to nearby areas. However, efforts to communicate and gain support for FAW control methods among local populations can have limited impacts. This study qualitatively explores “design looping” as part of three Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) campaigns in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Kenya for increasing community support for FAW mitigation. Such an approach not only potentially extends the reach and scalability of FAW control methods but also contributes to meeting Sustainable Development Goals for food security and community well-being. Findings of productive advantages for “design looping” in this study include (1) increased participatory access by project stakeholders and beneficiaries, (2) flexibility, as cost-effective and potentially continuous opportunities to refine ICT4D messaging to meet project goals, and (3) bi-directional learning between project producers and message recipients for improved message deployment. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cast digital communication competency into sharp relief. Rapid virtualization of how we work and learn has highlighted this challenge for business education. In response, the business communication syllabus must evolve to include digital communication competencies. Most of our students are comfortable with computer and Internet usage. However, our research uncovers a gap between their perceived and actual digital communication competency, as well as indications of stress in their online relationships. This article offers suggestions on creating a business communication syllabus in tune with learner and business needs given that digital communication is rapidly becoming the norm.

Employees often perceive periods of change-no matter how warranted or beneficial-as crises, exhibiting both cognitive and emotional reactions including feelings of insecurity and uncertainty, even fear, chaos, stress, betrayal, grief, and anger. Management must have a clear strategy for communicating with employees through change, as employee expectations for open and honest communication are increased in times of shift and uncertainty. Open, honest, and regular communication is essential to keeping employees motivated and productive. Benefits of effective communication in times of change include higher employee satisfaction and engagement, lower turnover, and stronger long-term commitment. Solid internal relationships also strengthen ethics-related outcomes such as fraud reduction and reputation management.

Effective communication is a fundamental step in providing best medical care and recognized as vital component of clinical anesthesia practice. Poor communication adversely affects patients’ safety and outcome. The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of anesthetist communication from patients’ perspectives at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH), Northwest Ethiopia.A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 423 surgical patients from April 1, – May 30, 2021. Perioperative patient-anesthetist communication (PPAC) was measured by using 15-items Communication Assessment Tool graded by 5-points Likert scale. Data collection was executed during postoperative time as the patients were optimally recovered from anesthesia. The collected data were cleaned and descriptive analysis was performed.A total of 400 (94.6% response rate) patients included and 226 (56.7%) were female. The median (IQR) age was 30 (25 – 40) years. Three-hundreds and sixty-one (90.3%) patients had reported good PPAC and 39 (9.8%) reported poor PPAC. The median (IQR) of PPAC scores was 53.0 (48.0 – 57.0) and range from 27 to 69. Highest mean score was observed for the item “Talked in terms I could understand” (4.3 ± 0.7). Lowest mean scores were observed for the item “Checked to be sure I understood everything” (1.9 ± 0.9). Patients who had underwent emergency surgery, no previous anesthetic exposure, had significant preoperative anxiety, no history of previous hospital admission, and moderate-severe preoperative pain were found to have poor PPAC compared to their counterparts in the proportions of 82.1%, 79.5%, 69.2%, 64.1%, and 59.0% respectively. There was good PPAC in our hospital from patients’ perspective. However, there should be improvements in checking the degree of understanding of the delivered information, encouraging to question, disclosing next steps and involving in decision-making. Patients who underwent emergency surgery, had no previous anesthetic exposure, had clinically significant level of preoperative anxiety, had no history of previous hospital admission, and had moderate-severe preoperative pain were found to have poor PPAC.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine how communication professionals enact an educational role aimed at improving organisational communication through communication training. Furthermore, this article analyses what this implementation means for the role of the communication professionals. Design/methodology/approach - Qualitative interviews were conducted with seven communication professionals and ten managers in two organisations. The organisations were selected due to their involvement in developing and implementing communication training programmes. The interviews were then transcribed and analysed inductively. Findings - This study demonstrates how communication professionals are expanding their professional role to become trainers in communication. The managers who participated reported increased awareness of the communication departments and the support they can provide. The communication departments became more visible in the organisations. Research limitations/implications - The study is qualitative and limited to two organisations. The managers' perspectives suggest that when communication professionals act as internal trainers, their role within an organisation is strengthened. Practical implications - The results of this study indicate that in-house communication professionals enable managers to improve their communication, boosting their ability to implement simultaneous large-scale training and rendering the communication department more visible and available throughout the organisation. Originality/value - This study adds to the existing discussion regarding the new roles of communication professionals in organisations by presenting two cases in which communication professionals are successfully functioning as internal communication trainers. The findings can help both researchers and practitioners gain insights into the future role of the communication profession.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe five key lessons learned from a decade of studying how scientists and science communicators think about communication strategy. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is based on the experience of the researcher and the underlying literatures on strategic communication and science communication. Findings - The key argument is that the scientific community needs to put more priority into enabling organizations to plan and implement strategic communication efforts on behalf of science. At present, there is too much reliance on individual communicators. Originality/value - The value of this paper is in the degree to which it argues for a more strategic, organization-focused approach to science communication that emphasizes the setting of clear behavioral goals, followed by discussion about what communication objectives might help achieve those goals and the communication tactics needed to achieve the prioritized objectives.

The Citizen Disaster Communication Assessment (CDCA) measures individual disaster communication activities that are intended to help communities cope across all phases of a disaster. Using the CDCA, this study examined associations among citizen disaster communication, neighborhood belonging, and community resilience using three different samples representing different disaster phases (Pre-event, Event, Post-event). Results indicate that more citizen disaster communication was associated with stronger perceptions of neighborhood belonging and community resilience at the Event and Post-event phases. In terms of specific citizen disaster communication processes that proved important, communication to correct disaster rumors and share stories was associated with greater feelings of belonging. Communication intended to confirm disaster information and tell stories was associated with stronger community resilience perceptions. Overall, results (a) confirm that citizen disaster communication is an important part of the disaster response and recovery ecosystem and (b) offer evidence of concurrent validity for the CDCA.
