Auricular acupuncture using the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol 1 stimulates 5 points in each ear - the Shen Men, sympathetic nervous system, liver, kidney, and lung. This protocol is also known as Acu Detox, and has been used for recovery in community-based settings and drug use treatment programs. It has also been proven to be effective in alleviating stress and enhancing a general sense of well-being. This article describes the auricular acupuncture and acupressure program developed for a university setting and its use as a tool to enhance harm reduction and mental health services.

We reviewed the available evidence for SP6 (Sanyinjiao) acupressure for the relief of primary dysrnenorrhea (PD) symptoms, as well as patients' experiences of this intervention. We searched six relevant databases and gray literature for publications dated up to March 2016. The search yielded 72 potential studies. Six of these studies, contributing a total of 461 participants, were included in this review. The primary outcome was pain intensity. Studies with significant homogeneity were pooled for meta-analysis. Qualitative data and quantitative data not suitable for meta-analysis were presented as a narrative synthesis. The Cochrane criteria demonstrated that the included studies were generally of low quality with a high risk of bias. SP6 acupressure delivered by trained personnel significantly decreased pain intensity immediately after the intervention (effect size = -0.718; CI = -0.951 to -0.585; p = 0.000), and pain relief remained up to 3 h after the intervention (effect size = -0.979; CI = -1.296 to 0.662; p = 0.000). However, patient-administered intervention required multiple monthly cycles to effect pain reduction. SP6 acupressure appears to be effective when delivered by trained personnel for some PD symptoms. Findings suggest that self-administered acupressure shows promise for the alleviation of PD symptoms. High-quality research is needed before conclusive recommendations are proposed.

Background: Handling of nausea and vomiting in first trimester mothers (emesis gravidarum) is mostly still using pharmacological therapy, even though there is a simple event by using massage at acupuncture points to treat emesis gravidarum. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of PC-6 and SP-3 acupressure on emesis gravidarum in first trimester pregnant women.Subjects and Method: This study is a quasi-experimental research design using a control group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted in July-August 2021. The population in this study were all pregnant women who experienced nausea and vomiting in the 1st trimester in the Nurobo Health Center Work area, Malacca Regency. A total of 40 pregnant women in the 1st trimester were used as samples which were divided into 4 groups of 10 people each, namely group 1 (PC-6 acupressure), group 2 (SP-3 acupressure), group 3 (combination of PC-6 and SP-3 acupressure), and group 4 or control group (vitamin B6). The sample was selected by consecutive sampling technique. Data analysis using Wilcoxon Rank-Test and Paired T-Test.Results: After intervention of accupressure in PC-6 point, SP-3 point, or combination of both PC-6 and SP-3 reduced frequency of vomiting and nausea and duration of nausea. Conclusion: accupressure in PC-6 point, SP-3 point, or combination of both PC-6 and SP-3 reduce frequency of vomiting and nausea and duration of nausea in pregnant women.

Background: The LIFE study was a randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of a self-acupressure intervention, Tapas Acupressure Technique? (TAT?), on weight-loss maintenance. The primary analysis showed no significant difference between TAT and social support (SS) for weight-loss maintenance, while exploratory post hoc tests suggested that, among participants with highest initial weight-loss, those in the TAT condition regained less weight than those in the SS condition. Objective: The aim of the current study was to assess adherence to, and satisfaction with, the experimental self-acupressure intervention in the LIFE weight loss maintenance trial.Design: This was a secondary analysis of adherence and satisfaction patterns in a large randomized controlled trial.Setting: The study was conducted at a prominent health maintenance organization in the Pacific Northwest. Subjects: This study involved 142 obese participants who had lost >10 pounds in a conventional weight-loss program and who were randomized to the experimental acupressure intervention.Interventions: The experimental intervention (n = 142) arm consisted of instruction and application of a self-acupressure intervention, the Tapas Acupressure Technique? (TAT?).Outcome Measures: The outcome sought was self-reported satisfaction and frequency of TAT practice Results: Sixty-six percent of TAT participants attended at least 6 of 8 intervention sessions. More than 80% of participants reported practicing TAT at home, on average, at least 2 days per week. Sixty two percent reported practicing <10 minutes per session, while 27% reported practicing 10-20 minutes per session. Higher satisfaction scores were significantly correlated with less weight regain (p = 0.001). Frequency of TAT practice was not significantly associated with changes in weight, stress, insomnia, depression, or quality of life. Conclusions: These data suggest moderate acceptance of, and adherence to, the TAT intervention. Further research is required to identify and achieve optimal home-practice levels of self-acupressure techniques.

Previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that acupuncture may be efficacious for insomnia. Instead of needling, acupressure, reflexology, and auricular acupressure are procedures involving physical pressure on acupoints or reflex areas. These variants of acupuncture are gaining popularity, perhaps due to their non-invasive nature. A systematic review has therefore been conducted to examine their efficacy and safety for insomnia. Two independent researchers searched five English and 10 Chinese databases from inception to May 2010. Forty RCTs were identified for analysis. Only 10 studies used sham controls, four used double-blind design, nine studies scored three or more by the Jadad scale, and all had at least one domain with high risk of bias. Meta-analyses of the moderate-quality RCTs found that acupressure as monotherapy fared marginally better than sham control. Studies that compared auricular acupressure and sham control showed equivocal results. It was also found that acupressure, reflexology, or auricular acupressure as monotherapy or combined with routine care was significantly more efficacious than routine care or no treatment. Owing to the methodological limitations of the studies and equivocal results, the current evidence does not allow a clear conclusion on the benefits of acupressure, reflexology, and auricular acupressure for insomnia.

Abstract Aim To investigate the effect of acupressure on fatigue among female nurses with chronic back pain. Background Chronic back pain is one of the most common problems among nurses and has numerous physical and psychological effects. One of these effects is fatigue that impairs an individual's life. Materials and methods This randomized single-blind clinical trial was conducted on 50 nurses with chronic back pain working at the selected hospitals in Isfahan, Iran. After convenient sampling, the subjects were randomly allocated, through lottery, to the two groups of experimental (n = 25) and sham (n = 25). In the experimental group, acupressure techniques were performed during 9 sessions, 3 times a week for 14 min for each patient. In the sham group, points within 1 cm of the main points were only touched. Data were collected using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), before, and immediately, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results The mean score of fatigue severity before the intervention was not significantly different between the two groups ( P = 0.990). However, it was significantly lower in the experimental group than the sham group immediately ( P < 0.001), 2 weeks ( P = 0.005), and 1 month after the intervention ( P < 0.001). Conclusions Acupressure on specific points of the foot and back improves back pain so, reduces fatigue. Therefore, acupressure can be used as a drug-free and low-cost approach without side effects to improve fatigue in nurses with chronic back pain.

Background: Collateral Meridian Acupressure Therapy (CMAT) is a relatively new technique that has been developed to relieve intractable pain. Little research has been, however, conducted to examine its effect on neck pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of CMAT on neck pain. Method: In this randomised, sham-intervention control, patient-therapist blind trial, 60 patients who suffered from neck pain and had restricted neck movement were recruited. Participants were randomly allocated into the treatment group (n - 30) and control group (n = 30). CMAT was performed on the treatment group, while the control group received sham treatment. Severities of pain before and after the treatment were measured on a scale of 0 (no pain) to 5 (most severe pain). Chi-square and t-tests were used to analyse categorical and continuous data, respectively. Results: All participants completed the study. Prior to the treatment, there was no group difference in demographic or pain data. After the treatment, the severity of neck pain in the CMAT group (0.7±0.6) was significantly less than that in the control group (2.8+0.9). Conclusion: CMAT may induce an immediate analgesic effect on neck pain. Its long-term effect requires further research.

Context. Both positive and negative results have been reported in the literature from the use of acupressure at the P6 point, providing evidence of highly suggestive but not conclusive results. Objectives. To clarify whether acupressure is effective in the management of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. Methods. A randomized, three-group, sham-controlled trial was designed. Patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy were randomized to receive standardized antiemetics and acupressure wristbands, sham acupressure wristbands, or antiemetics alone. Primary outcome assessment (nausea) was carried out daily for seven days per chemotherapy cycle over four cycles. Secondary outcomes included vomiting, psychological distress, and quality of life. Results. Five hundred patients were randomized. Primary outcome analysis (nausea in Cycle 1) revealed no statistically significant differences between the three groups, although nausea levels in the proportion of patients using wristbands (both real and sham) were somewhat lower than those in the proportion of patients using antiemetics-only group. Adjusting for gender, age, and emetic risk of chemotherapy, the odds ratio of lower nausea experience was 1.18 and 1.42 for the acupressure and sham acupressure groups, respectively. A gender interaction effect was evident (P = 0.002). No significant differences were detected in relation to vomiting, anxiety, and quality-of-life measures. Conclusion. No clear recommendations can be made about the use of acupressure wristbands in the management of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting as results did not reach statistical significance. However, the study provided evidence of encouraging signals in relation to improved nausea experience and warrants further consideration in both practice and further clinical trials.
