Libraries play a very crucial role in the higher education institutions by providing essential resources, academic support, and intellectual spaces for students, faculty, and researchers. Without a modern library, no academic institution can sustain and its existence is very much inevitable for any educational institution. This research article explores the specific role of libraries in higher education in India, with a special focus on the Central Library of the Central University of Odisha situated at Koraput. It examines the functions, services, and contributions of libraries in supporting academic endeavours, facilitating research and study, promoting information literacy, and fostering a vibrant scholarly community. The article also discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the libraries in adapting to the digital age and catering to the diverse needs of higher education stakeholders.

The Indian Institutes of technology (IITs) in India account for significant research outcomes from the country. This paper is an attempt to analyze the publications of five older IITs during the period 2007 to 2016 as reflected in SCOPUS, multi-disciplinary international database. A total of 10583 research publications have been downloaded and analyzed. This paper tries to give an overview of the research output of the five IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras) on different parameters like growth rate of research publications, authorship pattern, productivity per capita, degree of collaboration, etc.

Central University of Orissa is getting 8500+ e -journals from e-ShodhSindhu consortia of INFLIBNET. The University was established by the Government of India, MHRD in the year 2009. However, the University is getting e-resources through consortia from the year 2012 onwards. To assess the usage of these e-journals by the users of Central University of Orissa, the author analyzed the statistics using INFISTAT of INFLIBNET. It was found that there are certain resources which are being utilized more by the users, which reflects the popularity of the journals as well as the publisher. The study also shows the trend and statistics of usage by month, by year, by databases, and by journals, etc.

This paper attempts to analyze the growth of research work in the field of social sciences and humanities in Odisha during the period 1996 to 2015. The analysis has been done taking into account the publication output of Odisha as reflected in Scopus database. Bats have not received adequate attention in biodiversity research and conservation activities in India despite their ecological values. In the present study, we carried out an inventory of bat fauna in southern Odisha region during September 2014 to August 2016 and recorded a total 16 species of bats in seven families, of which the insectivorous bats were represented by maximum 12 species over frugivores and carnivores. During the study 76 roosting sites were recorded from exposed branches, foliage and cavities of trees, caves, crevices in large rocks and abandoned buildings and caves were significantly preferred by maximum 11 species. Gupteswar cave tourism site in Koraput district was found to be the most diverse and important bat roosting and breeding site in southern Odisha region. Cave tourism, hunting for ethno-zoological practices and cutting down of roosting trees were observed as major threats to bats. As the inventory was primarily based on roost survey, more systematic survey using mist nets and acoustic monitoring can further strengthen the bat fauna database of southern Odisha.

Traditional dental health practices which generally called alternative / complementary or unconventional health practices were practiced as early as 7000 BCE in the Indian subcontinent. Ethnomedicine become the vital source of medicine in the Koraput district of Odisha. Tribal communities like the Paraja and the Gadaba are advanced in such practice in the Koraput District. Total 40 plant species from 24 families were used by them for the purpose of brushing teeth and dental care. This information was collected from 37 Paraja and Gadaba tribal dominated villages of 25 Gram Panchayats belonging to 5 development blocks of Koraput district, Odisha. Out of 40 plant species, 13 have been described in the Ancient Ayurvedic Literatures. With the influence of globalization, area many of such unconventional health practices are now first disappearing in peril condition as they are considered as outdated, even in the remote pockets. Thus, it is high time to explore, identify, document, digitalise and disseminate this traditional knowledge.

The present paper attempts to assess and analyse the situation of food security in the context of its accessibility and utilisation among rural households in iron-ore mining region of Odisha, India. A comparative approach with statistical techniques like t-test, Z-test and F-test has been used in the present study. It has been found out that despite of higher average income and expenditure on food, the average calorie intake of households in mining region is significantly lower than the households in non-mining region. Even the proportion of households suffering from calorie deficiency is significantly higher in mining areas than in non-mining areas. The reason behind is the heavy dependence of household on market for consumption of rice. This shows that mining activities do not ensure food security to its rural households and have a significant negative impact on it. Hence, suitable policy measures should be undertaken by the administrative machinery so that mining could not only contribute the economic development of the region but would also ensure food security to the households in the region.

Submergence tolerance in rice is important for improving yield under rain-fed lowland rice ecosystem. In this study, five traditional rice landraces having submergence tolerance phenotype were selected. These five rice landraces were chosen based on the submergence-tolerance screening of 88 rice landraces from various lowland areas of Jeypore tract of Odisha in our previous study. These five rice landraces were further used for detailed physiological assessment under control, submergence and subsequent re-aeration to judge their performance under different duration of submergence. Seedling survival was significantly decreased with the increase of plant height and significant varietal difference was observed after 14 days of complete submergence. Results showed that submergence progressively declined the leaf photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, instantaneous water use efficiency, carboxylation efficiency, photosystem II (PSII) activity and chlorophyll, with greater effect observed in susceptible check variety (IR 42). Notably, higher activities of antioxidative enzymes and ascorbate level were observed in traditional rice landraces and were found comparable with the tolerant checkvariety (FR 13A). Taken together, three landraces such as Samudrabali, Basnamundi and Gadaba showed better photosynthetic activity than that of tolerant check variety (FR 13 A) and showed superior antioxidant response to submergence and subsequent re-aeration. These landraces can be considered as potential donors for the future submergence tolerance breeding program.

Community engagement is a tool to develop communities, improve wellbeing, and solve socio-economic issues. It includes relationships, collaborations, meetings, events, and research projects. Communities aid education systems in achieving their goals through human resources. As a result, the researchers want to involve the community by learning more about Jarkadanga Village and its residents. In this qualitative study, unstructured interviews were conducted, including one with the villager with the highest level of education (XII pass). Data collected in-person from locals during researcher s hamlet visit. Findings of the study revealed that Jarka Danga 's nature and culture blend, impacting the lifestyle and economy. Lacks of amenities, little awareness of government programs, lack of awareness about bad side of child marriage hinder the growth and development of the village.

Mining through the extraction of minerals provides an important structure for the development of countries that are endowed with rich minerals. Odisha occupies a prominent position in the mineral map of India. The state enjoys the distinction of being the principal producer of chromite in India. More than 96% of the resources of chromite are located in Odisha. But mineral extraction cannot be done without unduly interfering and damaging the environment, thereby negatively contributing to the livelihood assets like agricultural land. Hence an attempt has been made in the present study to analyse the impact of chromite mining activities on agriculture in the Jajpur district, the premier chromite-producing region of Odisha. A comparative approach with and without mining has been used in the present study. It is based on a primary survey of 100 households i.e. 50 from mining and 50 from non-mining villages respectively. It has been found that mining has affected farming as a source of livelihood. It is seen that people in mining villages have given up farming and have mostly shifted towards mining-related work. Further, those few people who are doing cultivation are cultivating for their home consumption only and not for selling. The production and productivity of different crops in the region have been affected and are comparatively less than in the non-mining region. This implies that mining activities are also degrading the quality of the soil. Thus, it can be concluded that the extraction of minerals has led to negative spillover effects on agriculture in the region, thereby raising the issue of sustainable development. Therefore it is highly required that some policy measures should be taken by the government and mining companies to address the negative impact of mineral extraction on agriculture in the mining region.
