This paper examines the conditions under which employee referrals serve as a screening function when there is a conflict of interest between the firm and the current employees concerning referral recruitment. In particular, I consider two potential mechanisms that lead to a conflict of interest: the employee's social connection with the applicant and her promotion prospects. Specifically, I posit that the employee will have an incentive to refer low-ability applicants if she has a strong social connection with them or if she faces the possibility of competing against her own referral to earn a promotion at the firm. Taking these potential sources for conflicting interests, I investigate the extent to which the firm can make use of financial incentives (fixed fees and bonuses) to align incentives of the employee with those of the firm.

Background Both primary care physicians and other specialists are not satisfied with the quality and content of written communication between colleagues(1). ?There is need of identifying the factors that lead to this dissatisfaction. Many of these are discussed in literature such as communication skills, teaching and assessment of referral writings to undergraduates, and lack of validated tool for evaluation of referral(2). This article is scoping review of literature for finding the problems, solutions, and challenges in referral writing. Methods The databases utilized for finding various referral systems are PubMed, ERIC, Pakmedinet and Google scholar. The article included in the study was 12 which were identified through PRISMA. These 12 articles were reviewed by two authors. (FA and TA) The first step was the application of Qualsyst criteria and then the two authors analyzed the final 12 articles for thematic analysis independently. Results The problems, solutions and challenges in referral writing were found after the thematic analysis by two authors. The multiple challenges regarding referral writing include the fact that details about the inadequate data written in referral letters, lack of teaching and learning strategies and lack of proper communication between physicians. There are many solutions like teaching and assessing the referral writing skills, introducing reflection and feedback to improve the skill among young doctors. Moreover, teaching the art of referral writing should include in the medical curriculum. Conclusion Referral writing is an important part of medical communication. A good quality referral will save time in management of patients. It will also enhance the outcome of patient management. There is need of teachings about communication skills in undergraduates and postgraduates students.

Aims To investigate the impact of promising a referral bonus and an autonomous referral request on nurses' referral likelihood and the quality of their referrals. Design We applied a 2 x 2 between-participants factorial design with referral bonus and autonomous referral request as experimental variables. Methods In May 2019, 110 nurses working in Belgian hospitals were shown a fictitious e-mail with a request from their employer to look for potential new-hires and filled out an online survey measuring referral likelihood and quality. Results Promising a referral bonus did not affect nurses' referral likelihood and quality. Instead supporting self-determination theory, nurses exposed to the autonomous request were more likely to refer and assure referral quality than those exposed to the controlling request. Conclusion Hospitals can increase nurses' referral likelihood and quality by framing their referral request in an autonomy-supportive way. Impact Recruiting nurses are more important than ever in the current Covid-19 crisis. Our findings offer practical insights on how hospitals can engage their employees in the recruitment of nurses (i.e. through framing referral requests in an autonomy-supportive way).

Ghana Health Service conducted an audit to strengthen the referral system for pregnant or recently pregnant women and newborns in northern Ghana. The audit took place in 16 facilities with two 3-month cycles of data collection in 2011. Midwife-led teams tracked 446 referred women until they received definitive treatment. Between the two audit cycles, teams identified and implemented interventions to address gaps in referral services. During this time period, we observed important increases in facilitating referral mechanisms, including a decrease in the dependence on taxis in favour of national or facility ambulances/vehicles; an increase in health workers escorting referrals to the appropriate receiving facility; greater use of referral slips and calling ahead to alert receiving facilities and higher feedback rates. As referral systems require attention from multiple levels of engagement, on the provider end we found that regional managers increasingly resolved staffing shortages; district management addressed the costliness and lack of transport and increased midwives' ability to communicate with pregnant women and drivers; and that facility staff increasingly adhered to guidelines and facilitating mechanisms. By conducting an audit of maternal and newborn referrals, the Ghana Health Service identified areas for improvement that service providers and management at multiple levels addressed, demonstrating a platform for problem solving that could be a model elsewhere.

INTRODUCTION Rapid, reliable and efficient communication in healthcare systems with finite resources promises to improve patient care. Telephone engagement has effectively monopolised the referral process in the acute setting. Hence, traditional interhospital referral networks are potentially time consuming, not expeditious and frustrating. There is often no comprehensive documented communication record or audit trail. Social media, however, suggest that instantaneous, secure and dependable exchanges of information can occur via alternative conduits, potentially transforming the acute clinical referral system. The National On- Call Referral System (NORSe) was established in 2010 as an alternative referral paradigm.

Abstract Background Current research highlights a need to investigate the factors affecting periodontal disease referral. Limited literature exists on periodontal disease referral in Australia and no comparison to the periodontal disease referral guidelines exists. Objective This study analyses the factors affecting periodontal disease referral and the adherence to guidelines in general dentists in Queensland, Australia. Methods Fifty‐seven general dentists who are members of the Australian Dental Association (Queensland) undertook an online survey. Results The disease factor regarded as most important (90% of respondents) was unresolved inflammation upon re‐evaluation. The non‐disease factor regarded as most important (79% of respondents) was the operator's level of training. There is low awareness of the guidelines (36.7%) yet a reasonable adherence to them (78.3%). Of those aware of the guidelines, there was a statistically significant poorer adherence to the guidelines compared to those unaware ( P = 0.036), while there is no significant difference in the adherence to guidelines between those who have and those who have not attended continuing professional development ( CPD ) courses ( P = 0.66). Conclusions Adherence to current guidelines is not significantly impacted by the level of awareness of the guidelines or CPD attendance. The results from this study suggest a need to refine the current guidelines to better inform decisions about periodontal disease referrals.

The purpose of this study was to analyze outpatient referral patterns of children in Jeonbuk National University Dental Hospital. All patients under 16 years old who were consulted from the external facilities were reviewed based on the electronic medical record of Jeonbuk National University Dental Hospital from 2015 to 2018. Total 720 boys and 460 girls with an average age of 7.4 years were referred from local dental clinic (85.2%) for treatment severity (90.2%). 3.2% of patients has disability with the highest number of intellectual disabilities. The patients were usually referred at the pre-treatment stage with higher rates if they had disability or medical problem. Referral rate by chief complaints was highest in surgery, followed by reparative treatment and orthodontic treatment. 2nd referrals in pediatric dentistry had a higher rate of referrals to minor surgery and pulp treatment than of first referrals. The time point of 2nd referral was relatively delayed with increased ratio of ‘during treatment’. These results suggest necessities of appropriate case selection and referral based reasonable criteria for pediatric dentist.
