MS was examined in three rural areas which had different access to technology. As a percentage of total milk production, MS was 18.74% in areas with access to traditional technologies alone, 21.21% in areas with access to artificial insemination (AI) and veterinary health care facilities and 24.2% in areas with AI, veterinary health care facilities and organized milk marketing facilities. In urban areas the marketed MS was 62.4%. In 1992, MS ranged from 25 0180-35 2485 litres/day. MS for 1995 and 2000 were estimated at 40.73 and 40.78% of total milk production, respectively. Factors affecting the surplus of milk were identified using Cobb-Douglas andlinear functions to estimate the coefficients of explanatory variables. Total milk production, size of operational holding and education level of the head of the family significantly affected MS in rural areas. In urban areas, total milk production was the only factor affecting MS significantly. 收起
