The effects were compared with the steroid prednisol... 展开 A study was conducted to investigate the beneficial effect of curcumin (present in turmeric) on red blood cells (RBCs) of children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS). The effects were compared with the steroid prednisolone. Venous sampleswere collected from children (2-6 years old) with MCNS admitted to a hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. Aliquots of RBC samples were subjected to ferrous ascorbate induced lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the presence of the test compounds (curcumin and/or prednisolone). Inhibition of RBC LPO by prednisolone was less (38.52%) than that with curcumin (50.30%). LPO was inhibited effectively by 65% in the presence of both curcumin and prednisolone. Curcumin not only inhibited LPO but also restored cellular non-enzymatic antioxidants -- total sulfhydryl content, glutathione, and ascorbic acid. It is concluded that dietary supplementation of curcumin is effective in treating children with nephrotic syndrome. 收起
