The... 展开 The potential efficacy of the turmeric antioxidant protein (TAP) isolated from aqueous extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa) in protecting tissues from peroxidative damage was studied in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) treated rats. The increased basal aswell as promoter induced lipid peroxide formation in the tissues of CCl4 treated rats was significantly inhibited by 40-70% by TAP administration. The observed decreased antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase and antioxidant concentrations of reduced glutathione, total, protein and non-protein thiols and ascorbic acid in the liver of CCl4 treated rats were nearly normalized on TAP pretreatment. The increased activities registered with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase in the liver of CCl4 treated rats were conferred protection by 50-80% on TAP treatment. Glucose-6-phosphatase and the membrane bound ATPaseactivities were decreased in CCl4 treated animals and were completely restored on TAP treatment, thus, suggesting that TAP treatment prevents tissue injury by neutralizing the oxidative stress induced changes. 收起
