A feeding trial was conducted in Rajasthan, India, where 30 crossbred cows were equally divided into 3 groups which were grazed for 4 h + maize stover ad libitum + 1.5 kg concentrate mixture/cow/day (T1), T1 + 2 kg concentrate/cow/day (T2) or T2 + 60 g mineral mixture/cow/day for 120 days. It was shown that average milk yields were 6.38+or-0.67, 6.81+or-0.29 and 7.80+or-0.34 kg, with corresponding milk fat contents of 3.39+or-0.14, 3.52+or-0.24 and 3.48+or-0.14% in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The cost of milk yield was Rs. 14/kg. The additional costs of feed/cow/day in T2 and T3 were Rs. 18.32 and 20.74, while the daily return over additional feed cost from sale of milk per cow was higher in T3 (Rs. 8.85) compared to T2 (Rs. 7.70). However, additional feed cost per kg milk yield was lower in T3 (Rs. 2.65) compared to T2 (Rs. 2.69). The total return over additional feed cost from milk sales per cow was higher in T3 (Rs. 1061.47) compared to T2 (Rs. 924.24). These results show that milk production cost decreases when cows are fed diets with concentrate and mineral mixture.
