While this is merely an eyesore to the average person, it poses a serious problem to marine vessels. Ships with heavy biofouling issues often face reduced sailing efficiencies. Furthermore, the presence of barnacles destroys protective surface coatings. therefore promoting corrosion. as well as reduced efficiency of underwater acoustic devices. While surface corrosion due to microorganisms has been an area of substantial study, corrosion due to macro-fouling organisms, such as barnacles is an area that is relatively underdeveloped. 收起
