Retaining of tree species in agriculture and pasture lands is a common practice in Himachal Pradesh. Hence, a study was carried out in subtropical region of Himachal Pradesh to assess the multipurpose tree species in agrisilviculture and pastoral silviculture agroforestry systems. Analysis of agrisilviculture and pastoral silviculture agroforestry systems being practiced by different categories of farmers revealed that a total of 29 multipurpose tree species were retained in these agroforestry systems. In agrisilviculture systems <i>Grewia optiva</i>, whereas, in pastoral silviculture systems <i>Dalbergia sissoo</i> and <i>Acacia catechu</i> were retained by all the categories of farmers. Out of 29 identified species, six species viz., <i>Acacia catechu</i>, <i>Albizia chinensis</i>, <i>Albizia lebbek</i>, <i>Bauhinia variegata</i>, <i>Dalbergia sissoo</i>, <i>Leucaena leucocephala</i> were found to be nitrogen fixing tree species. The number of trees in agrisilviculture and in pastoral silviculture agroforestry systems varied considerably. In agrisilviculture system <i>Grewia optiva</i> (22.80-54.21%), <i>Leucaena leucocephala</i> (31.94%) and <i>Toona ciliata</i> (34.60%) were the dominant tree species, whereas in pastoral silviculture system <i>Acacia catechu</i> (31.37-86.69%) was dominant tree species among different categories of farmers.
