The crop is often severely affected by various viruses causing mosaic and necrosis in the leaves, stunting of the plants and reduced flower quality. The following viruses have been identified in lilies grown in Israel: cucumber mosaic cucumovirus, lily symptomless carlavirus, lily mottle potyvirus and a variant, L6, which induced local lesions on Chenopodium amaranticolor, and strawberry latent ringspot nepovirus (SLRV). The first 3 were transmitted by aphids in a nonpersistent manner while SLRV was transmitted by nematodes. Lily X potexvirus was detected in the lab. using ELISA but this observation requires confirmation. Infection by more than 1virus has, in the past, led to complete degradation of lily stocks. The success of lily production depends, inter alia, on the availability of a simple and reliable assay method for the various viruses and on the absence of viruses in the propagation stock. The following steps are recommended to produce high quality material: (i) preparation of nuclear stocks from tissue culture; (ii) increase of virus-free nuclear stocks by rapid propagation; (iii) growing of foundation stocks under insect-proof conditions; and (iv) distancing propagation fields from commercial lily fields; the propagation fields should be sprayed with insecticides and oils. At each step the material should be checked for viruses and the grower will choose the type of stock accordingto his needs. The stocks released to the grower should be of a quality that will enable him to grow them for at least 3 seasons. The growth of new stocks away from old infected ones is advised. 收起
