However, foreign firms are alsoactively involved in lobbying in the U.S. We identify severalpredictors of foreign firm CPA using an institutionalperspective. Based on a sample of 1,701 publicly listedforeign firms from 37 different countries during theperiod 1998–2014 and using penalized maximum likelihoodand Poisson estimators, we find that the culturalcognitive,normative, and regulative institutional characteristicsof the home countries of the foreign firms canexplain a firm’s willingness to engage in CPA in theU.S., over and above firm and industry-level factors.Managerial Summary: There is growing recognition ofthe importance of nonmarket strategies in ensuring favorableoutcomes for firms. However, most of the research oncorporate political activity (CPA) in the U.S. has focusedon domestic firms. Foreign firms are also active participantsin CPA in the U.S. In this article, we try to identifythe country-level predictors of foreign firm CPA, more specificallytheir lobbying activities, using data on 1,701 publiclylisted foreign firms from 37 different countries duringthe period 1998–2014. Our results indicate that countrylevelinstitutional factors influence a foreign firm’s likelihoodof engaging in CPA in the U.S. above and beyondmore well-known firm and industry-level variables. 收起
