Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) is application of water below the soil surface through the emitters, with discharge rates generally in the same range as surface drip irrigation. In general depths of placement of laterals range from 20 to 70 cm. Laterals in SDI systems should be installed at shallower depths on coarse textured soil and slightly deeper on fine textured soil. The SDI system has been used for irrigating many vegetables crops with positive response under different soil and climatic conditions. Among vegetable crops grown under SDI system, tomato was the most popular followed by lettuce, peas, sweet corn, melons, potato, cabbage, beans, squash, carrot, onion, broccoli, and asparagus. Response of SDI on okra was found to be positive with respect to crop growth, yield and water use efficiency. The yield increased significantly due to placement of laterals at 0.10 and 0.15 m depth below soil surface. The maximum increase in yield as compared to surface drip 13.48% under SDI with 0.10 m placement depth of lateral below ground surface.
