Foods of animal origin, especially poultry and poultry products and raw eggs have been implicated in the outbreak of human salmonellosis. In the present study, a total of 534 poultry eggs collected during 89 sampling operations (each sampling operation contained 6 eggs) were examined for Salmonella contamination and Salmonella was isolated from 58 eggs, representing an incidence of 10.8%. Forty-three eggs had only surface contamination, 7 eggs were contaminated only in their internal contents and from 8 eggs Salmonella was isolated from surface as well as from internal content. Total number of 66 isolates of Salmonella were obtained and identified. Antibiotic resistance profiles of Salmonella isolates showed resistance to penicillin (96.9%), vancomycin (83.3%), erythromycin (81.8%), rifampicin (80.3%), trimethoprim (42.4%), chloramphenicol (28.7%), streptomycin (24.2%), gentamycin (3.0%), kanamycin (3.0%), furazolidone (16.6%) and tetracycline (9.0%). None of the 66 isolates tested showed absolute susceptibility to any of the antibiotics used. 收起
