What is not clearly understood is the cause for this loss of function. What role might the observed brain parenchymal anomalies play, and how do potential long-term elevations in intracranial pressure affect neurocognition? It is known that raised intracranial pressure may lead to visual loss and developmental delays, yet our understanding of how intracranial pressure affects the brain is woefully inadequate. Currently, the most accurate method for measuring raised intracranial pressure requires placement of a transcranial pressure monitor. Measurements of absolute pressure and mean wave amplitudes are collected over a 24- to 48-hour period to account for normal diurnal variations in pressure, and it has been shown that patients left with untreated high amplitudes do not recover spontaneously.
