Field studies were conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India, during the 2009 kharif season, to determine the effect of soil treatment using biological control agents and fungicides in controlling the brown leaf spot of rice. The treatments comprised Tilt 25EC (propiconazole) at 1.4 kg/ha, Contaf 5EC (hexaconazole) at 5 kg/ha, thiram 75WP at 13 g/m2, Trichoderma harzianum at 10 kg/ha, T. viride at 10 kg/ha and Pseudomonas fluorescens at 10 kg/ha. The disease intensity, shoot length, root length, number of tillers and yield were recorded. Results showed that all the treatments were significantly effective in reducing the disease intensity when compared to the control. T. harzianum was the most effective in reducing the disease intensity, followed by thiram.
