Twenty four male albino rats were divided into four groups; the first (G1) was untreated control, the second (G2) was the diabetic positive control, and the third (G3) and the fourth (G4) were diabetic treated with 10 g/kg body wt and 20g/kg body wt S. persica twig powder in the diet, respectively for 28 days. Induction of diabetes in G2 decreased the antioxidants, a-amylase activity, and the high-density lipoproteins, whereas increased blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, liver enzymes, kidney function indices, immunoglobulins and lipid peroxidation. In addition, liver, kidney and pancreas tissues were severely injured in G2. Treating diabetic rats with S. persica twig powder in G3 and G4 greatly improved all biochemical and histological damage and restored all nearly to the normal. In conclusion, S. persica twigs have antioxidant, antidiabetic and antilipidemic activity. The fresh twigs of Salvadora persica L. (Salvadoraceae) have been used in medicine for the treatment of a wide range of medical problems. 收起
