Inoculums cam be of free culture and immobilized cells. Floating Carrier Swabs (FCS) are made by attaching the Immobilized Cells (IC) to the either ends of the swabs. Microbial population of 2.86×10~6 CFU-ml was used for oil degradation. Oil contaminated water sample inoculated with free cells degraded the oil approximately 55%, where as in case of Immobilized Cells oil degradation was 29% and Floating Carrier Swabs are able to show approximately 73% of oil reduction. The factors affecting oil degradation parameters were investigated, such as pH, aeration, nutrients and reusability of Floating Carrier Swabs. Immobilized Cells are more stable than Free Cells (FC) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at various pH levels. Floating Carrier Swabs oil degradation rate was not affected by aeration, Free Cells and Immobilized Cells oil degradation rate was decreased because of anaerobic conditions. The optimum dosage of nutrient was determined to be 2gl~(-1) for effective oil degradation. Reusability test revealed that the oil degradation ability of Floating Carrier Swabs is approximately 6 times. 收起
