The amino acid, protein, lipid and glycogen content during larval development of worker honey bee (<i>Apis cerana</i>) was studied. In the 2L, 3L, 4L and 5L (2-, 3-, 4- and 5-day-old larvae, respectively), the average weight was approximately 5, 38, 129 and 375 times more than the egg, respectively. The glycogen content of the egg and 2L were identical, but the concentration in 3L and 5L was two times higher than in the egg. It was lowest in 4L. Triglycerides and total lipids varied in the order of egg > 2L > 4L > 6L. The highest concentration of phospholipids, free fatty acids, triglycerides and methyl esters of free fatty acids were present in the egg compared to the others. The detected amino acid in 2L, 4L and 6L were valine, gamma -aminobutyric acid, tyrosine, glutamic acid, threonine, arginine, aspartic acid, glycine, serine, lysine, histidine, cystine, proline, beta -alanine, asparagine and glutamine. Leucine, isoleucine and beta -alanine were not detected in the egg. The total amino acid concentration varied in the order of egg > 2L < 4L > 6L and was highest in 4L. The protein content was also highest in 4L and varied in the order of egg < 2L > 3L < 4L > 5L.
